I think generally if people are going on fishing expeditions, they need to come in and do most of the work themselves. This seems especially true if they’re following an LLM‘s unfounded hunch.

My neighbor started flying an upside down German flag. I’m having a hard time figuring out what the hell is going on in this town.

Same. I’m dying to subdivide our lot and build something modern but dread a public hearing.

Down the street, a three acre empty lot was subdivided into two very nice single family homes. This required a variance, since it did not meet the two acre minimum. Dipshits on Facebook with falling-down farmhouses are losing their minds because of the "loss of character".

I live in a very small, kinda crappy, rural town that is cost burdened by housing. Our town has a GREAT website about housing affordability and an awesome diagnosis of the problem. Their "affordable housing plan 2022-2027" does very little to meet the moment www.brooklynct.org/planning-zon...
Housing Affordability | Brooklyn CT
Real estate prices are still skyrocketing as high demand meets low supply in the housing market. Brooklyn is no exception to this phenomenon. In 2019, more than one third of Brooklyn households paid mo...

The priest at my church would talk about how every once in a while our pride flag would be stolen. She said that she liked to think that it was by a student who couldn’t afford her own. The thing about security culture is that it doesn’t let you take a generous view.

In my view, the two biggest safety risks in our town are being hit by large vehicles that go too fast and slipping into homelessness because of the cost of housing. Lord knows this is not what local Facebook groups would have you think.

This PoV infiltrates. My spouse and I have a mild disagreement because we want to put up a pride flag from a tall tree in our very conservative small town. She’s worried about someone messing with it and asked about putting up a camera. I don’t want to live that way! We can just replace the flag!

It is very sad to me how many Americans have untreated anxiety disorders. I do not need to do a 20 minute security sweep of my hotel room. I do not need to put AirTags in my kid’s shoes. No one is trying to traffic anyone at the grocery store.

My fun weekends used to end with bottle caps in my jacket pockets. Now it’s these.

“awful people don’t deserve to be killed, but they don’t deserve to be praised, either” is apparently a thought too complex for the pundit mind

It's really alarming how many Americans don't care or don't know that they're constantly operating killing machines and see any impediment to that as a breach of freedom.

At one point Vance is torn between caring for a family member and getting to a Big Law interview. He drives all night at 100 mph and then when he's pulled over he explains to the cop that he's a veteran.

Far from the MOST objectionable passage, but the reckless, macho entitlement was always there

iirc, this book was a Required Reading for all first-year students at my undergraduate school (uh, not for *me*, I'm old) and I wonder if it's still on any lists there or anything.

We know that we live in the age of bullshit and misinformation when even the covid-cautious scolds are vaccine deniers.

It is not the case that breakthrough infection is inevitable. The covid vaccine DOES prevent catching and spreading covid. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
A comment from a defector article by a user named Woz. "While you should definitely get vaccinated, remember that it does little-to-nothing to prevent you getting COVID or spreading COVID to others. But the good news is there's no reason you can't mask in most/all public situations, which is incredibly effective at both preventing you from getting and from giving it to others. Mask up people!"

The cause of poverty is not having enough money.

There are, indeed, distorting effects when we don't address the root causes of shortages. But in the meantime, we can and should alleviate suffering!

At my archives, I have a reading group where we read articles and chapters from scholars who have used our holdings. I’m starting to think that none of you want your evidence to be reproducible.

If there is anything I have learned from writing a book that spans 67,000+ years and a great many disciplines, it's that SO many academics have really poor citation practices.

lol and also we've all been there or currently are there or are in some other version of these kinds of repository management choices
The repository had relied partially on external storage media (external hard drives and CDs) for storing digital archival content. Staff were following guidelines like the “3-2-1” rule5 but did not have plans or procedures to monitor the health of external storage devices.

Then they hired Emily, which was a really smart move, and my read on the situation was that she was like "oh holy shit we need to build some structure here."

In parallel, the archives would happily accept records on external media, slap an accession number on it, and let it sit on the shelf.
