Brillant (and hilarious) review. Literary criticism that boldly expresses how many of us outcasts living in the shadows of society experience Trent Dalton's wildly lauded and rewarded fiction (not that I have read any since BSU, and even that I couldn't finish).

Not just an opportunity lost to make game-changing social progress ensuring protection against this and the next (potentially worse) pandemic (by maintaining good, honest public health education and advancing public/business clean air initiatives etc); it's an opportunity squandered and spat on.
6 years today the first COVID case was identified in a man in Wuhan marking the beginning of a global pandemic that changed the world. We are way less prepared today to face another pandemic than we were back then. This fact makes me sad.

The “new normal” for Australia in the last few years is around +6% on the pre-pandemic baseline – worse than even the UK (see below). Even out to June this year (as variant evolution slowed) it was still running at +5% annually. Are there any lessons we could learn from NZ?

I'll never understand why there isn't more activism about gov wastage of tax payer $, given there is so much of it. This is a clear cut and outrageous case, but it's also been happening endemically in the Centerlink and aged care systems, with middlemen 'providers' fleecing the system.

The price of letting a pandemic steam on with near no mitigations or public health messaging in place. To quote: 'Taiwan offers certification incentives to businesses to improve air standards, offering a model Australia could adopt.'

No. You can’t solve the health fall out from uncontrolled circulation of a novel virus and a poorly managed pandemic by flogging people harder to get back to work.

These past years, I have felt very vindicated in my decision to return to Australia after living in NYC - when I had the opportunity to get a green card and stay for the rest of my days. But I'm reminded right now of why NYC is where I would want to be had I stayed in the States.

Massive loss of opportunity that society has back peddled on literally one of the only good things to have come from SARS-2 - the WFH pivot. More 'hybrid' jobs than there used to be, but few totally remote and fierce competition for those there are because, like the headline says, many ppl want it.
Scientists have been studying remote work for 4 years and have reached a very clear conclusion: “Working from home makes us thrive”

Flexible work boosts well-being and focus—people sleep more, commute less, eat better, and spend more time with family while maintaining results.

Excellent news. Please note that seriously smart virus experts continue to take seriously smart preventive measures to avoid contracting a novel virus that affects every system in the body, sometimes chronically and/or catastrophically. So people (like me) out in public masking are in good company.

Well, this is a sad, and at least somewhat avoidable, development.

I became a vegetarian 40 yrs ago (increasingly wholefood plant-based since). This reduces my carbon footprint, is far kinder to other beings who suffer unspeakably in becoming 'meat', and grants many health benefits (e.g., perfect blood pressure and cholesterol). And it's delicious. #goplantbased

The organizers of the UN event for healthy indoor air used a canary on all their materials and gave everyone canary pins.

Why? Canaries detect dangerous substances in the air of coal mines. We all need to be like canaries and warn about the dangers of unhealthy indoor air due to COVID and climate.

90% by male violence

A woman every 5 days

Almost all are men they know, partners/ex/family

A national emergency that needs all men to speak up & act together to end this
