I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

a. sex addiction counseling group in texas did a surveymonkey and extrapolated the results to the entire us population which is the sort of research design that earns you an ff on an intro methods class (the extra f is for extra effort), and

This is a particularly dangerous falsehood. People tend to seek asylum in countries where they have existing ties. Considering France and others actually provide higher levels of support, people are not coming to the UK because it is "generous". 6/

The new policies are meant to ensure that people who have been granted asylum will receive less protection than they currently receive, a government source said.

“There are people who are ‘asylum shopping’ across the continent, looking for the country that offers them the most,” the source said.

“We have been criticised in this country for being too generous – creating a pull factor. We will reduce the pull factors,” the source added.
