finished felix gilman's the half-made world today, a really inventive and beautifully written steampunk western marred inescapably by how it chose to deal with its native american analogues. I kept wondering if the book was trying to wrong foot me on purpose, but nope!!

My most alienating Oscar opinion of the year is that Wicked pt deux is not a sequel but the simultaneously shot second half of one movie and that therefore it'd be weird to renominate the two stars. This isn't the Emmys; you don't get rewarded for the same role year after year. Will delete shortly.

people keep asking "have they fixed Chess" and that depends on which of the musical's two problems we're discussing. if it's "Chess is very difficult for audiences to follow", then they've ABSOLUTELY fixed Chess. if it's "Chess is talking about a lot but isn't SAYING anything" then no they haven't.

this is one of my favorite shows, it's rarely staged, and when it is, there are invariably massive changes that means you never know what you're getting. I know the broad strokes will be the same, but what about the themes? what will be preserved? what's the directorial vision of Chess THIS time?
