The real task isn’t “teaching people to spot misinformation.” It’s rebuilding conditions where verification, deliberation and accountability are possible. Critical thinking only works when the world around it gives those skills a place to take root.

“Inoculation” training assumes misinformation behaves like a stable virus, but doesn’t. Narratives mutate, communities adapt, and many denialist groups treat the inoculation attempt itself as proof of manipulation. The model breaks once identity enters the picture.

People lump everything under “fake news,” but misinformation, disinformation and malinformation are different. They can come from different actors and operate differently, mixing them into one category hides how these systems form, adapt and reinforce themselves.

In the UK and US, platforms reward speed, emotion and identity signalling. Even well-educated people get pulled into distorted information spaces, so the core problem isn’t ignorance, it’s the incentive environment that shapes how information spreads and sticks.

Finland is one comparatively successful model, but not just because schools teach critical thinking. Finland has high social trust, strong public-service media and coherent institutions. The whole system supports verification and open deliberation, you can’t copy the surface without the structure.

I'll say again: we are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.
We say Amtrak and the post office "lose money" but we never say highways, the court system, the Pentagon, etc lose money

This is horrific and exactly what those of us in Black studies, gender studies, women’s studies have been warning our colleagues in the sciences about. Their seeming neutrality will not save them.
This is why I keep pointing out it's a big problem media & politicians keep putting a spotlight on the US citizens being harmed by ICE/CBP without putting the abuses in the context of all of the immigrants, whatever their status, being harmed. It normalizes the harm through omission & others them.
41 minutes of watching two shipwrecked men trying to flip a boat and signaling for surrender/help before firing on them again reminds me of the 9.5 minutes Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck, in that it’s an agonizingly long time to be killing helpless people who clearly posed no threat.
