Exciting days at @bbowt.bsky.social Dancersend tackling thick scrub in a south-facing clearing lost to scrub/secondary woodland in the 1970s. The amazing RoboFlail made short work of pulverising followed by volunteers raking up. Scarification should help release special flowers from the seed bank.

This fantastic exhibition has been extended for a fortnight, so you can still catch it if you're quick...
Hard to believe that Hertfordshire Natural History Society's 150th anniversary is drawing to a close. But there's still a celebratory exhibition to come at North Hertfordshire Museum in Hitchin starting 16 December @hnhsoc.bsky.social @hertsbirds.bsky.social

Another good turnout of our volunteers at BBOWT
Dancersend Reserve coppicing and clearing fallen ash trees along one of our rides to let more light in to benefit wildflowers like Stinking Hellebore, seen in the foreground here. @bbowt.bsky.social

Copy arrived this week and it is fabulous, opens up a whole new world of interest. Absolutely in awe of author Martin Drake for putting it all together. It's pricey, shame the publishers couldn't have found a way of subsidising it more, but it contains priceless expertise and years of hard work.
Excellent! It's here and available to order from RES/CABI; the eagerly anticipated volume - years in the making - British Dolichopodidae. Really looking forward to having this sat on my desk. A colossal achievement by Martin.

This is very concerning and is almost certainly being championed in the US by Trump's tech and oil backers, both of which see the UK as a battleground at the moment.
Remember the controversy when Obama was accused of intervening in UK politics? This is the current US government openly seeking to undermine liberal democracy in Europe.

I'm getting a bit fed-up with endless dull, dreary, damp days whenever I can get to @bbowt.bsky.social Dancersend but have to admit that at this time of the year it is the dark, damp, weedy corners of the reserve where the jewels are. Thank goodness for snowdrops, Scarlet Elf-cups and slime moulds!

It was a very pretty drive down to @BBOWT
Dancersend Reserve for our Wednesday work party - still below freezing down in the Vale and the Chilterns showing up beyond Mentmore Towers. Clearing scrub and fallen trees from one of our most important grassy clearings soon warmed us up.
