Becoming a U.S. citizen takes years and involves immigrants acquiring a green card, extensive interviews, background checks, classes and a citizenship test. The naturalization ceremony is the final step to the process, where the oath of allegiance and a citizenship certificate are granted. Immigrants approved to be naturalized went to Faneuil Hall Thursday - known as the country's cradle of liberty - for that long-awaited moment to pledge allegiance to the United States. But instead, as they lined up, some were told by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that they couldn't proceed due to their countries of origin.

And so, I’ve been obsessing about it a fair bit. I find it’s shifting how I think about pitches, moving away from questions like, “Is this interesting enough to report out?” and towards, “Is there a mind at work here that readers want to spend time with?” We’re inching toward more seasoned writers—writers who can turn a phrase, and have vocal print. And we know that because they’ve published other things. They have a voice and have built a career around that voice. Chatbots can replicate the skin of their sentences, but can’t incarnate the substance. That is probably too weird for what we’re hoping for in this conversation!

Early planning documents reviewed by WIRED describe a statewide transport grid designed for steady detainee transfers across Texas, with ICE estimating each trip to average 100 miles. Every county would have its own small, around-the-clock team of contractors collecting immigrants from local authorities deputized by ICE. It is a subtle transfer of the physical custody process into the hands of a private security firm—authorized to carry firearms and perform transport duties “in any and all local, county, state, and ICE locations.”

For the first time, the City of Milwaukee's annual budget will include a line item tied to reckless driving. Buried within the city's capital improvements budget lies a new entry, "Street Light & Traffic Light Knockdowns." The figure attached to it is eye-popping. The Department of Public Works (DPW) expects to spend $3.5 million on repairing vehicle-damaged lighting infrastructure in 2026.

Sara Whitmer • • • 1h • 8 I'm sure many of you have heard by now that earlier this week, IU k*lled the print edition of its student paper, the IDS. The issue that was supposed to print this week contained criticism of the Whitten regime and IUs further slide into scist control, and they couldn't allow that to happen during Homecoming, when all the rich alumni are in town. Enter Purdue! The Purdue student paper, The Exponent, owns its own presses. Yesterday, in an act of tremendous solidarity with their biggest rival school, they printed the forbidden issue of the IDS. They then drove it to Bloomington overnight and stocked all of the IDS boxes on campus, just in time for Homecoming. Solidarity is what makes us stronger, and solidarity will be what ultimately allows us to triumph, if we can ever truly get it together. I hope everyone has a fun, safe day if they're going out today, and I hope we can think about what acts of solidarity we can begin taking to really make this movement MOVE - beyond a permitted expression of upset into more active resistance. 75 12 comments

Another reason to support leveling I-794: thousands of tourists arrive into Milwaukee each year at the Discovery World dock and are greeted by busy car traffic, highway ramps, and a cavernous interchange paralleling Clybourn Street. Not a great first impression!

For Murphy, this theory's apotheosis was Dustin Pedroia. Before Pedroia became an American League MVP and two-time World Series champion for the Boston Red Sox, he was a shortstop at Arizona State, listed at 5-foot-9. Recalled Murphy, "I used to tell Pedroia: 'Your height is to your advantage. If the ball goes through your legs, it'll hit you in the cup.""
