A team that forces the question: can you fairly be criticized as cheap when anybody you sign in FA has to outperform with virtual certainty the cheap, controlled 2-3 win players you already have at almost every position, in order to be worth it?

I’d consider it more of a “we’ll probably see you in October” premium, as mentioned re: the Dodgers on @mketailgatenetwork.bsky.social — maybe not an extra player but a bit more quality than you’d expect for a one-year rental
As long as they are willing to pay the Stearns Tax (i.e., an extra prospect).

This is the main thing about modern sports that I think folks are slowly starting to catch on to. The money becoming so insane led to a high % of the players in the leagues not actually liking the sport very much. The money is so insane that you simply have to do it if you’re good at it.
But also a lot of NBA players simply hate their job (fair, relatable, can't get mad at them for that) now to the degree that I don't think previous generations of players did.
