THE ELEMENTS, by John Boyne, is one of the best books I've read in ages. The structure. The language. The interweaving of characters and plots. Brilliant. (Granted, some triggers for sure. So be aware that parts of it are very difficult to process.)

I'm in the waiting area of a surgical suite in a huge hospital and a nearby violinist is playing OH, DANNY BOY.
This seems like a poor choice of musical selection to me.

Reading some of the Booker finalists. I found FLESH, by David Szalay, propulsive and trenchant. It was more unto short stories following one man from youth to old age, episodic in the best way. So often I find Booker nominees showy in all the wrong ways (for me) but this is quite wonderful & fresh.
