How to be an informed, pro-library, anti-book ban voter in upcoming fall elections (if you have them) and well into the future.

Don't just celebrate banned books. Don't just read banned books. VOTE to support the democratic institutions creating access to them.

I wish I'd read it earlier so I could read discussions about it because I could see it being received so many different ways, but I always ignore as much as I can until I get to read it myself

I had such a delightful reading holiday - HERE FOR A GOOD TIME by Pyae Moe Thet War, YELLOWFACE by RF Kuang, and I MIGHT BE IN TROUBLE by Daniel Aleman. I don't usually read on a theme but I kinda love that I did.

Currently reading WOODWORKING by Emily St. James, which I'm absolutely loving.

We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.

TLDR: Judge Immergut GRANTS a 2nd TRO blocking the Trump admin from sending ANY federalized troops from ANY state into Oregon/Portland. (Full hearing thread below)
joshuajfriedman.com
Judge: That's what I'll do. Prohibit federalization or deployment of any NG troops into Oregon. For all reasons in prior opinion. Deployment of federalized military is ultra vires and contrary to law, violating Title 10, section 12406. I also find it's likely that defendants violate 10th Amendment.

The fact they jumped straight to AI actors modeled after women when, if I’m not mistaken, male actors are a higher labor cost kind of says it all doesn’t it,

Dahlia Adler's Come As You Are is FABULOUS! It's easily the best YA rom-com I've read this year. Smart, funny, sassy, and romantic. My favourite of Adler's many terrific books. 📚👍👍 @missdahlelama.dahliaadler.com

Trying to figure out how many ways we can flash the red lights here. This was NEVER EVER ABOUT BOOKS. Books were the tool.

THEY ARE STEALING YOUR RIGHTS.

THEY
ARE
STEALING
YOUR
RIGHTS.

Reporters, here’s the assignment:

Next time an elected or appointed official responds with, “it’s not banned because you can still buy it,” the mandatory followup question is, “Do you believe Americans have a First Amendment right to access and share speech in our publicly-funded libraries?”
flfreedomread.bsky.social
In order for Judge Winsor to get to the conclusion that access elsewhere was an acceptable solution for a school to remove a book based on viewpoint, he had to deny patrons and authors their First Amendment rights in the library.

Let that sink in.

See I actually like that because I feel like she’s been sitting on some of them a long time and this album to me reads like “I finally feel safe to air all these things that’ve wrecked me for years.”

AT MIDNIGHT is out in paperback today from @flatironbooks.bsky.social! This is such a beautiful anthology, and while I am absolutely biased, the publications quoted here are not, so trust them even if you don't trust me! www.dahliaadler.com/at-midnight
On the left is a paperback copy of At Midnight: 15 Beloved Fairy Tales Reimagined and on the right, these quotes: "Simultaneously whimsical, adventurous, and bone-chilling." ―Publishers Weekly, starred review, "Each story has a unique twist and writing style that makes it hard for readers to put down this compilation... extremely refreshing and inclusive with wonderful writing. " ―School Library Journal, starred review, “Timely and timeless.” ―Kirkus, and "This anthology does not shy away from uniqueness, boldness, or diversity—elements embraced by each of these stellar writers in their own beautiful way.” —Booklist. Across the bottom, a line reads "Out now in paperback from Flatiron Books!" The cover of At Midnight is also navy, covered in sprawling branches and white dots that could be either snow or stars, with a centrally placed stone path up to a cottage behind which rises a large moon. The title is above the moon, the subtitle and "edited by Dahlia Adler" are below the path.
