The Polish government annlunced that they will honour the ECJ ruling and implement recognition of same-sex marriages certificates from abroad.

Obviously, the PiS-supported president is very much against, but he has no say in the matter.

The EU court has ruled that Poland must recognise the marriage of a Polish same-sex couple who married in Germany, even though Polish law does not allow such marriages.

The ruling requires Poland to change its system for recognising such marriages so as not to discriminate against same-sex couples.

This seems to be a fitting metaphor for current politics.

A legislation in a trivial matter, that the majority doesn't care but is rather against, gets passed.

Meanwhile, the really important, big, and relevant issues (climate change, aging baby boomers, much needed infrastructure project) do not.

Yalta, Helsinki, Budapest, Minsk - there is a long Western tradition of being weak in negotiations with the Kremlin.

We should stop signing treaties that favor Moscow and were written in the Kremlin.

The leaked US-RU 'peace plan', beside being absolutely amateurish in both language and content, is also incredibly stupid.
It also boils down basically to:

1) Russia gets the land,
2) US get the money,
3) Ukraine gets empty promises and toothless provisions, and
4) Europe gets the bill.

Women deserve to study and work in safe places. Period.

Let's hope that men in academia start doing more to make this a reality, structurally

It's not enough to refrain from personally harassing; we need to change the norms

Be an anti-harasser, visibly, not simply a non-harasser

"foreign states or other groups [can use it to] influence policy decisions, warp electoral strategies, and erode public trust in the democratic institutions that rely on accurate polling. This potentially turns a tool for scientific discovery into a vector for information warfare."

This is bad.
AI presents a fundamental threat to our ability to use polls to assess public opinion. Bad actors who are able to infiltrate panels can flip close election polls for less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee. Models will also infer and confirm hypotheses in experiments. Current quality checks fail

Well, her PhD is actually very useful. It is a great repellent for the type of losers that leave comments like that under a woman's celebration of her defense. If a doctorate makes a woman unattractive in their eyes, GOOD.

"Europe is in a culture war with Trump’s America.

Part of this involves Trumpists propping up their ideological allies in European politics. A deeper level involves humiliating Europeans in their dealings with the US."

"Trump can only do this because Europeans let him."

So, Poland's economy is decarbonizing FAST.
I guess getting pissed at the Russians (from whom PL was buying gas and most of its coal, as domestic production was expensive and insufficient) and stopping imports from RU was the best incentive. See how much you can achieve with spite.
Truly remarkable: Poland used to be a climate laggard.

Today, wind and solar are increasingly replacing coal in the Polish electricity mix with almost 30% of all electricity generated to date this year from wind and solar.

In 2000 coal provided 95% of Polish electricity.

Today it is at 51%.

The scientific publishing is broken and open-access not only failed to fix it, it made it worse.
If we do not address the parasitic nature of the for-profit (>30% margins!) publishing, we will not solve the problem. And if the funders (universities) do not intervene, it won't change.

A must read:
