A commission of a woman and her stand in the Bahamas! A robot flies into the sky, overlooking a vast, stylized city. A killer vtuber pops out of the computer. She makes a peace sign despite the blood clearly dripping from her knife. She's happy to see you! A DND party walks in the shadow of the moon in the dark deep winter of Barovia.

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

oh man the choreography in this one page alone is fantastic.

Because I usually give up on gachas and slots before they can sink their teeth in because I will just go "Nope!" and walk away.

But this was low-investment enough to really get me to think about how our awful understanding of probability can be EASILY twisted.
moiddoesart.com
Oh on a related note I did also just spend $2 as opposed to several hundred to realize "Oh this is how slots and gachas can fucking wreck you".
moiddoesart.com
So I was playing Unfair Flips, and it did truly have me thinking about several things. For one, it's probability and our relationship with it. Namely how terrible human beings are at it. Even when I knew the game was absolutely truthful at odds, I kept ascribing a kind of sentience to it.
A screenshot from the game Unfair Flips, showing text.

"Humans have a strange relationship to Probability. Even when presented with completely truthful odds (as you can see in the top left of the screen) people still want to believe in some trick. Some way of cheating the odds, flat as they are." A second screenshot of Unfair FLips.

"THERE IS NO WAY TO BEAT THESE ODDS."

"THERE IS ONLY TIME."

I personally lost patience after getting all of the upgrades.

But that's not really the game's doing. Winning was not a matter of upgrades. Upgrades are just a modifier.

It is a matter of time.

It has always been a matter of time.

Probability is not under my control. It never has been.
moiddoesart.com
If you think the game (or any art, really) is playing a trick on you specifically then it's a sign of arrogance and short-sightedness. You have terminated the thought in exchange for raw animal rage.

There is no conversation being had here. You just killed it. Go do something else.
moiddoesart.com
You cannot make authoritative declarations on art. You have to interface with it. Truly engage with it and examine why it makes you feel a certain way. If you can critique it do so on its level. Examine what it is aiming for.

Look inside and ask if this reaction is intentional.
moiddoesart.com
Maybe it's a product of a capitalist society that regards anything as commodity or the nature of a medium that demands massive amounts of multidisciplinary labor to exist at all.

It's one of those things I kind of hate about most online writing. Authoritative declarations on art.
moiddoesart.com
Are games just doomed to this kind of writing? I mean obviously not, but it's the kind of thing that I keep thinking on. Games are never regarded as art, they're regarded as a kind of product.

Yes, even by those who love to claim that games are art.
moiddoesart.com
The game had gotten to one particularly poor writer so badly that he had written a frankly horrible review that fails to interface with the game as art at all. Instead of investigating why he had gotten angry at it, he instead was mad that it had been made at all.

Pure reaction. No introspection.
moiddoesart.com
Of course I was interested to see if anyone else had thought about it, because I am both impatient and extremely introspective with a habit of getting lost in my own head.

What I found instead (and I will not be linking it because it's pretty poorly written and cruel) was someone angry at it.
moiddoesart.com
But the odds? No, of course not.

I literally fell into the mental trap of thinking, or rather, HOPING there was a trick. But there was none. There is no trick. Why on earth would there be?

It's just an unfair coin toss. That is the point. The point is that it is just probability and time.
moiddoesart.com
You COULD cheat the game. But it's not malevolent. It's just lines of code and sprites and sounds arranged in a way to deliver a certain experience. Why do that?

Odds are flat. And there is no thought behind the process itself. Why would there be?

There is obvious intent behind the game sure.
moiddoesart.com
The text is lamenting you. You see "Tails..." as though to make the pain worse. You got close but you didn't quite get it!

It's a psychological trick and a particularly mean one. And it had me thinking of cheating. Messing with the game's code.

But that's part of the exercise, isn't it?
moiddoesart.com
A rising tone escalates. You get closer and closer, the sound gets higher, more angelic. You can see the number of exclamation marks increase.

And then, as a friend of mine pointed out, you lose with an anticlimactic *tink* as your coin flops again. You did not hit 10 in a row.
moiddoesart.com
As though the thing itself is alive, and worse, hostile. This is of course nonsense; it is a series of calculations and odds weighed against me. It is also a very deliberate piece of art; the game has one particularly nasty trick it plays when you keep getting decent flips.
