There were nights where you asked the Emperor to give you psychic powers, any of them, just a little, so you could submit yourself to the Tithe. The Emperor did not provide for you in this way, nor did he protect you. You do not say this out loud usually.

He did protect you in a different way. He gave you the strength to mortify your flesh so none might look upon you and desire. He allowed you to tolerate long nights alone, shut away from your natural family, studying to be the best. And he guided you to his service in the Adeptas Sororitas. You wept as you left Terra to join the Convent Sanctorum on Ophelia VII, not out of grief but of joy. You found your home among the sisters of the Order of the Bloody Rose, and had you been able to weep tears of sanctified blood the day you took your vows, you would have done so — though your squadron leader would probably have disapproved. Sister-Superior Talasan doesn’t approve of much, thus making her your perfect leader. You would follow her into hell if she asked you to.

You have to. There is nothing else left to you. Your role is to be a martyr. You’ve known this from the time you swore yourself to the service of the Adeptas Sororitas. Someday you will die, and you will weep with joy when you pass into the Emperor’s Light. Less important, but no less sacred, is your role as bearer of the Emperor’s Peace. You carry a small bolt pistol alongside the rest of your armaments to prepare for this eventuality. Before every battle, you handle it, you clean it, and you sanctify it. You haven’t had to kill one of your sisters yet, but you won’t let another woman fall from grace like your Legantine. You’d rather see her die first.

In a very real way, the Black Ships and the Vestals saved you, though you cannot say the same for very many others. You were born on Terra into one of the many serf families that litter the hive cities. Your mother died from carrying you, that should have been the first sign. You were bounced around between foster families, some related, some not. The longest you stayed anywhere was a year. You learned to not seek security or stability — it would only be ripped from you.

Shade is not your birth surname. Your birth surname doesn’t matter. What does matter is that one day, you were pulled out of your detention at the scholum and told to wait for a transport outside. It was like your schoolbus, but smaller and black and soundless. It had no windows. You didn’t want to board. You fought, but eventually you were forced on.

Had you known what awaited you, you might not have fought so hard.

Being a psychic null made everything make sense. It turns out the Emperor’s grace was with you all the time. You had to suffer to realize your rare genetic talent. You cast no shadow within the Immaterium, and while some consider you soulless, you will never, ever be susceptible (beyond a vague discomfort) to psychic assault, and thus the powers of Chaos and Ruin.

You were the first psychic null on Holy Terra in a decade, a true treasure. That black transport took you to the Somnus Citadel on Luna, the headquarters of the Sisters of Silence, a legion of psychic nulls just like you. Here, you did not have to beg for crumbs of affection; you were treated like every other Sister-In-Waiting and judged on your merit and performance alone. Perhaps it was no wonder you became a Novice-Sister before you turned twenty, and took your Vow of Tranquility before you turned twenty-five.
