Hello! 👋

A (re)introduction for those who don't already know me:

I'm a photographer, I live in Glasgow and I produce work that looks something like this 👇

Set of three minimalist black and white Polaroids, held up in my hand against a blank wall. Each Polaroid shows a single object, apparently suspended in mid air, silhouetted against a lighter background. The first is a feather, the second is an egg, and the third is a small twig. The light background in each image has a slightly dappled texture, and fades gradually away into to a band of darker shadow at the top of the frame. Square-ish Polaroid emulsion lift on a white background. The image shows a simple dark reddish glass vase with three single stems of dried plant material, silhouetted against a light background in a warmish tone that resembles plaster. The plant stems each have a sparse umbel-shaped flower head at the top, with a cluster of smaller stems radiating out from a single central point, each with a tiny piece of dried out flower at the tip. The image itself is approximately square, but with uneven edges that are slightly ragged and folded in places where the Polaroid emulsion has been laid on the paper. Towards the edges there are small pieces of the dried Polaroid chemistry still clinging to the emulsion, giving it a slight rough texture and adding to the plaster-like effect. Close up colour photograph of a small cluster of dried out "helicopter" sycamore seed pods clinging to a tree branch in autumn. The seed pods are backlit by low sun, making them glow like little golden lanterns. The background is a blur of dappled light, with soft bright highlights against deep rich greens. The colour tones are warm and autumnal. Close up black and white photograph of a couple of large white Phalaenopsis / moth orchid flowers. The flowers have an almost sculptural quality to them, and the closest one has a prominent sweeping feature in the centre that resembles a delicate figure reaching out and upwards like the figurehead of a ship. The background fades to dark, but the flowers are lit by bright sunlight coming through a window blind that is out of shot - the blind creates sharp, striped shadows that give the petals of the flower an intriguing almost chequerboard pattern to them.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Photograph from 1911 taken by Herbert Ponting whilst with Scott's Antarctic Expedition The monochrome photo is taken from within a cave. The walls of the cave are made of ice. The cave entrance is in the mid distance with two figures standing looking out towards a distant ship. Between them and the ship there is first a 'beach' of ice before the sea itself. The ship could be up to 800 metres away What makes the photo so special is that where the figures are at the cave entrance there is a band of very white snow and ice (contrasting with the comparatively dark inside of the cave) that creates a stark framework in which the men and the ship are captured. It is made even more dramatic by the fact that the cave entrance is at least 30 metres high and is in the shape of a distorted elipse with the tail sloping off to the right at the top of the elipse The photo being in monochrome in a largely white environment makes the photographers skill all the more laudable

This thread reminds me of one of my regular rants:

I keep seeing researchers trying to make robot/AI "companions" to provide company or emotional support to disabled people.

I DON'T WANT A ROBOT TO BE MY FRIEND, I WANT IT TO CARRY MY SHIT FOR ME AND BECOME A SEAT WHEN I NEED TO SIT DOWN! 🤦‍♀️

There are absolutely zero useful, functional robots here. there is one that can "wave to people at a museum" and "talk to you" (in extremely narrow situations) and there are industrial ones I guess but there is no "robot revolution" and to report otherwise is misleading to the general public.

Took the (borrowed) Bronica out today as I'm still experimenting with medium format.

Don't expect to see the results any time soon, so here's one from a previous time I took it out to visit the (slightly punk) cows!
