Kind of an awkward PSA because I've had some artist mutuals recommend these sites/tools, but
"ai image detection" tools are snake oil, and I feel like nobody bothered to scrutinize them.

So I opened photoshop cs6, drew a smiley face, and uploaded it to the "accurate" detector:

In an ideal world, the general public shouldn't have to watch execution videos in slow-mo, at multiple angles, and scour the Internet for more evidence.

We should be able to trust officials and journalists to do it, but we've had to become a society of war investigators.
It's obviously good that citizens with smartphones can create multiple records of these shootings and undercut propaganda and government lies about them. But I find it a little deranging that being an informed news consumer in 2026 requires watching what are essentially snuff videos in slow-mo.

Our analysis at @bellingcat.com on the killing of Alex Pretti breaks down the video evidence.

He never reached for his gun.
Agents sprayed/tackled him while his hands were up.
He was disarmed before he was shot.
The first shot came from an agent firing at him.

Another thing I learned in the town hall is that the events in Minneapolis are being well-documented because of the thousands of people who trained to become legal observers after the murder of George Floyd
We are observers, not protestors. We show up to document and film the atrocities ICE is committing. Using 5 year olds as bait. Kidnapping senior citizens. Breaking down doors without warrants. Murdering poets and nurses. Media has all of that information because *observers* were there to document it

Should go without saying:

Game devs working in mobile (could be you, colleagues, friends etc?) should check on what kind of permissions your app asks for vs. truly needs.

Don't let someone in your company casually decide to sell player locations to authoritarian governments... for a few bucks!
I should follow this up with another facet since it's related to games.

Unity's ad system (+ its 2022 acquisition Iron Source) can & will report your rough location (~zipcode granularity) if you allow a game to "communicate w/ devices on local network."
