Welp due to overwhelming demand (=one[1] nudge from the inimitable @jopabinia.bsky.social) I'm making an informational comic about dicyemids #invertefest 🦑🌊
I do not know how long it will take to finish, so please enjoy the heck out of this title page for now
Outlined in pen and inexpertly colored with alcohol markers, this square drawing contains the title text "DICYEMIDS a.k.a. octopus pee worms" above a cartoon of three fish yelling "EWW" at an octopus, who smugly responds, "You're all jealous that you don't have your own private parasitic phylum." Inside the mantle (body) of the octopus, its kidney is labelled, and a zoomed-out view from inside the kidney shows three strange blorpy wiggly worm things. (They are dicyemids.)

Dear god let this man cook.
Pritzker: It’s time for us to be done with optimism about their motives. Time to stop wondering if you can trust the nuclear codes to people who don’t know how to organize a group chat. It’s time to stop ignoring the hypocrisy in wearing a big gold cross while announcing the defunding of children’s cancer research… Autistic kids and adults who are loving contributors to our society don’t deserve to be stigmatized by a weird nepo baby who once stashed a dead bear in his car. Our military service members don’t deserve to be told by a washed-up Fox TV commentator, who drank too much before being appointed Secretary of Defense, that they can’t serve their country simply because they are Black, gay, or a woman.

David Johansen, the last Doll standing, is gone. We devote a show to him this week, because how could we not? Let me count the ways: bit.ly/3DStmxf

Watching barnacles sweep the ocean for food is so mesmerizing. They look like eyelashes opening and closing. I could watch this for hours. #barnacles #intertidal #marinelife 🦑

I can't not love anything with a hog sucker on it! And those coelacanths! Gotta get one.

Redhorse ID can be confusing, even for professionals, so I made these cheatsheets (in 2011!). They have since been used by state agencies, labs, and many anglers. PDF downloads aren't working on my site, so here they are as images. Share wherever it might be useful. #redhorse #nativefish #fishing

I was doing the same thing half a mile away, with the same cranes. But no flower and no eagle. I did cut down two trees, though.

The Sicklefin Redhorse description came out today as Moxostoma ugidatli. I might have led it to completion, but it is really Bob Jenkins’ legacy and done in honor of the Cherokee who really discovered it. Https://doi.org/10.1643/i2024049.

What a great story! The introduction alone is well worth reading.

We CT scanned thousands of vertebrates from US natural history collections and made them freely available. Countless people have used the data for research (>200 pubs) and to learn anatomy/morphology.

A few gar/cicada prints (4 or 5) left. If you're in IL/WI/MN/IA, in person delivery may be possible. $10 off for that, so $70. Here are a couple shots I've received from people who already got theirs framed. If you want one, message me. Don't use etsy if you want the discount. #gar #fishart #cicada

I've built a machine that can be Confidently Wrong. It can also make pictures that all look a bit the same, as well as make a video of you kissing any celebrity or person you know. In payment, I'd like to boil the world's oceans dry, & steal all literature. For some reason, my head is not on a spike

BABY Alligator Gar!

At less than one inch long and two weeks old, these future river monsters already breathe air. Watch as one takes a little gulp (and tiny bubble burp)!

Yes, these are the same fish that can grow over 8 feet long and over 300 pounds!

Are there more fish in its future?

I was definitely confused.

There are some disability things that make winter tough for me but I also love being able to nightlight earlier in the evenings and I love the deeper critters the winter storms pull into the Salish Sea! We get feather boa cydippids and gossamer worms and sea angels and baby octopus… 🐙🦑🌿
