Yes, we are directly impacted by the shutdown. And yes, Dems must stand their ground for as long as it takes. Failure now means a rapid slide into dictatorship. Every day more people are coming out, & the largest nationwide day of protest in US history is just 2 weeks away. Hold the fucking line!

It’s important for folks to understand that when Ezra Klein speaks he’s usually talking to Dem party donors. If you’re listening to his podcasts or reading his writings and are NOT a Dem party donor or otherwise not in a position to buy yourself a politician or 3, the message isn’t likely for you.

The Democratic Party is a coalition that naturally should and wants to be two or three different parties, and we'd all be better off if we had a proportional electoral system that allowed that. The abnormal dysfunctional system that doesn't should not be taken for granted as set in stone forever.

If nothing else, it should be a pretty big red flashing warning that Dem leadership in Congress is hated *by their own voters* to an unprecedented degree. This isn't just normal grumbling. They can't even show their faces at mass protests because they'd be booed and they know it.

In any event, we can argue what they should do but congressional Dems obviously aren't going to. Which is why they're being sidelined, and this will accelerate, while governors and state/local officials take the lead. And they're not sitting around waiting for the midterms.

Every regular tool Congress has, he's already nullified and eviscerated. Legislation, appropriations, oversight, impeachment. He is for all intents and purposes ruling by decree already, the only choice for Congress is to either play along and pretend or rally the people for a radical confrontation.

We're not in a situation where Dems win the midterms and then Congress can hold him in check for another two years, ride it out. That's just not the system of government as it exists anymore. Whether the next Congress will have the ability and political will to fight back is being decided right now.

They don't pick their nominees or control how they're chosen (except sort-of-but-not-really president). They have no control over who's a member. They aren't the central hub for messaging or campaigns. They are useless hollow shells.

We destroyed parties and then wonder why democracy is collapsing.
