Oh shit, it's 2025, so time for a new one-post review thread of every game I play this year! I use an x/10 ranking because it helps convey general sentiment with limited characters. 10 is Maximum Finn Shit, 5 is OK, 1 Super Bad.
mrfinnmccool.bsky.social
Oh, I technically never made a 2024 iteration of this thread! Ah well, as good a time to start as any. As always, 10 great, 5 OK, 1 sucks ass and if you want more in-depth thoughts go check out my Backloggd: backloggd.com/u/Mr_Finn_Mc...

Thank you for the suggestion, yanks, we shan't be doing this.

Here’s a primer on ‘primer.’

It’s pronounced ‘PRIMM-er’ if you mean “a small book” or “a short informative piece of writing.”

It’s pronounced ‘PRY-mer’ if you mean “an initial coat of paint.”

The category was more sort of intended for the more cordial opponents. (If anything Lace and Phantom would be candidates for moving)

Based on this classic tweet, with a category added.

Now that I've finished Silksong I can finally do my boss tierlist.

"Oh, of how good they are"?

No, not exactly.

"Child says something socially inappropriate but hilarious and you're not allowed to laugh" is a universal parental experience, but must be particularly heartbreaking for a comedian. Like, imagine Michael Phelps's kids swam in a way that would get them told off by daycare staff.

OUT NOW: @shariauncle.bsky.social returns as we review Silksong perfectly. A lot of folks are getting heated with wild takes about this game and letting the facts get muddled. Not us: we review the game objectively, via the perfect method: ranking its mechanics on a tier list.

I just finished Silksong last night and thank God I have someone to give me the facts instead of having to grapple with my feelings.

Cyrptmaster

A fun word puzzler and a sometimes enjoyable dungeon crawler. Carried by its gorgeous art and, it should go without saying the voice acting. Wish it didn't run out of steam in the final act.

Become the Moon

Fun while it lasts, but you quickly realise there are a limited number of strategies that are actually worth pursuing. That is, find a way to get as many stat boosting star cards as possible.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes

Played this one with Lauren and it was a fun time. Carried pretty heavily by its vibes, and I strongly recommend this one to the Twin Peaks sickos out there.

Steamworld Heist II

Tedious and packed with grind. Disappointing in a way that makes me a little scared to ever revisit in the first in case that one was the same and I was just too stupid to notice at the time.

Astrea: Six Sided Oracles

Mechanically ambitious but I think combines the randomness of deck and dicebuilders in a way that doesn't quite work and discourages you from pursuing interesting strategies. Also the art doesn't do it for me. I feel like none of it sticks in your brain.

Arco

A good game that could have been an incredible game if it were a lot more consistent tonally. Can't decide if it wants to be a serious, postcolonial grindhouse western or a silly "get me 10 goblin asses" style fantasy. Really wish it just ditched the latter!

How can a game where it might be straight up impossible to succeed in many instances never once feel like it's wasting your time? Perfect for sicko moments where you manage to use the random bullshit it gives you to barely pass a level. Constantly get the urge to replay it.

Sea of Stars.
Nice to look at and has moderately engaging combat, but massively bogged down in maguffin chasing "and then" storytelling. Despite the vibrancy of the art the world ends up being kind of sauceless. Could barely bring myself to care enough to finish.
