Why billionaire Peter Thiel is suddenly talking about the antichrist | Aaron Rabinowitz @etvpod.bsky.social

Billionaire Peter Thiel has the ear of politicians at the top of the US government - so his recent lecture series on the antichrist ought to be particularly concerning.

My heart breaks for the parents and children at the centre of this story and the bravery it has taken to share their stories publicly. I'm so pleased we have journalists like Sirin and Lucy who can handle that sensitively and tell the story so eloquently.

Article from Sirin and Lucy does an excellent job at highlighting how that choice is influenced and pressured. How seeking knowledge and information to make an informed decision can leave you dependent on people who recommend dishonesty about the situation and feed you medical misinformation.

The idea of "radical responsibility" and the recommendation to step back and let the mother decide about resuscitation when things go catastrophically wrong. This isn't about empowering women to make informed choices about their own bodies, this is about fear mongering into dangerous consequences.

One of the things I'm always struck by whenever I investigate the topic of wellness or alternative medicine is how much the promise of empowerment and autonomy is used as a cover for absolving the practitioner of responsibility when it all goes wrong. And this is highlighted so explicitly here.
This is an astonishing and maddening and sad story, just incredible work from Sirin Kale.

It’s also downstream of many of the things @aliceemmalouise.bsky.social has talked about on @skepticswithak.org for a decade - medical mistrust as a result of medial bias, exploitation of women as empowerment.

That it touches briefly into the flat earth movement doesn’t surprise me - when Alice and I attended the FE conference in 2018, we saw people expressing their alt-med and anti-medicine views. Also no surprise that it hints at alt-right, trad, barefoot and pregnant stuff too. All in the mix here.

Websites promising an end to high energy costs, thanks to a miracle device developed by Elon Musk, draw people into a scam that's too good to be true.

And of course, the headline is wrong here, because the “based on how they look” standard means any woman could be banned from single sex spaces based on how someone thinks they look. Trans people will bear the brunt, but so will anyone not performing gender “correctly”, including butch lesbians.
The core aim of the Terf movement - a tiny number of newspaper columnists who melted the brains of middle aged reactionaries - was always to encourage maximum public hostility against transgender people, and give them the impunity to act upon it.
