A lot going on here. Watch the video first, then read MPR's account of what happened. The driver passes into a space where there is no law or accountability, but then out again when local police show up. Later on the police say they did NOT intervene. (OK officer...)

Before the 2024 election, I outlined 9 ways Trump had damaged Constitutional democracy, saying the 10th and final barrier was We the People.

We’re not a year into democratic backsliding. We’re a year into a plurality of American voters endorsing nearly a decade of backsliding, and opting for more.
The Institutions of American Democracy are Hanging by a Thread
Trump has brought the United States further down the path of democratic backsliding than many realize. The election is the only barrier left.

Just got gassed pretty good at the labor union anti-ICE protest in Portland. Massive march, 5-10k strong. Vibes were very much liberal rather than radical. Lots of kids and older folks.

They gassed the whole crowd as soon as it marched on ICE, in broad daylight.

we said all along that they wanted Gawker dead not because we embarrassed a pro wrestler but because the Epstein story is one Gawker was covering a decade before most other people caught up & was just one of many stories exposing powerful people and their misdeeds
Among the batch of newly released emails from Jeffrey Epstein: Epstein telling Peter Thiel he would “gladly share…expenses for the Gawker suit.”

This was sent the day after @rmac.bsky.social and @mattdrange.bsky.social reported in Forbes that Thiel was behind the lawsuit that would bankrupt Gawker

More than 34,000 Minnesotans signed up to be trained as ICED observers with various activist groups in recent weeks, many of them since Jan. 7, when a federal agent shot and killed Renée Good.
Thousands of new ICE watchers hit the streets after two killings
Minnesotans outraged by the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti have signed up in large numbers to monitor and protest ICE with other activists.

Twin Cities rapid responders have set up a "filter blockade" at 34th and Cedar and are calling for volunteers and donations. This is a new tactic developing over the last week: community is allowed to pass, but ICE agents are stopped/slowed before they can terrorize our neighbors.

Advocacy/tolerance for political violence is a very bright line that divides democracies from democracies that are backsliding into authoritarianism. Democracies in which one of two major parties openly endorses political violence, or at least is winkingly tolerant of it; are democracies in trouble.

New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

Even completely ignoring the Podesta emails, this is insanely dank. We all know plenty about how Russia recruits Americans, and we know too much about Epstein, to dismiss this as coincidence. Sometimes the presumption really does validly flip 180 degrees.
Vance’s benefactor Peter Thiel, Epstein, and Russia’s ambassador Vitaly Churkin having an “important lunch” 1 month before the 2016 election — right before the Podesta emails were released by Wikileaks
