I’m just here for bikes and zoning reform.
Day 3 of #WeekWithoutDriving! This pretty normal day for me, would be nearly impossible for many Americans because of how we build our communities. For others driving isn’t an option no matter how poor the conditions. We can do better!

@americawalks.bsky.social #bikewalkcfl
It’s comparatively easy for a car driver to make up time lost after a signal. Not so much for people walking and biking. Make signals shorter or get rid of them.

Based on a few days of walking #Providence (and watching behavior), I think the city could do with fewer.

Slender streets can save many lives. To get them, buy better fire engines…

There are 10 traffic deaths for every fire death. Have a policy that whenever your city replaces a fire response vehicle, buy one that can navigate smaller streets. ~ @siegman.biz #cnu33
Any idea of the mechanism for this? I’m for congestion charging but I would anticipate it might increase speeding if there’s less blockage. Perhaps a decrease in frustration moves?
I guess they ran out of “Sidewalk Closed” signs. 😆. Hopefully they pour it quick so we can get back to LOS! #walk #pedestrian

“…disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…”

Do car-free zones hurt disabled people? We asked experts.
City planners and advocates are seeing "accessibility used as a political football."

Here is the author if you want to give a follow: @futureofwhere.bsky.social
@clmarohn.bsky.social talks about how local govts should ensure older people can turn their existing bedrooms into a duplex or add an ADU just by renovating so that these spaces can be well used and maybe older people don't have to move out to downsize. #IncrementalUrbanism #strongtowns
The article highlights taxes and mortgage rates as a barrier to older people moving. Another barrier is how far they would have to move because of residential segregation. It's bad enough to have to move houses but to also have to move to a diff neighborhood or maybe even a diff town is a big burden
I used to think people smiled at me because it was novel to see someone #bikikg in a skirt. But people have been smiling at me all day and I’m wearing pants.

I guess people just like bikes.

Just ported my tweets over with @blueark.app. As a data hoarder, this is my happy place.
A pro-community culture is as least important as better regulations. How do we restore a culture that says yes to neighbors, yes to proximity, yes to child-friendly spaces, yes to diversity of options, yes to long-term benefits?
Small businesses need small spaces to do business.

Damn right
When you have young kids, your urbanist critical eye gets cranked to 11.

No curb ramp? Infrequent, unreliable bus service? Sidewalks covered in debris? Not enough street lighting at night? Stupid, dumb, little red flags so you can beg to cross the street? All of it becomes intolerable.
