A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

You’re weekly reminder the Kanopy is awesome, and totally free.

(Ur library may have a different service, but it’s 100% worth checking)
I’ve been plowing through a lot of the classic noirs on Kanopy - some great movies!
At least half the Criterion Collection is sitting there free, along with almost every important Giallo, a fair amount of French new wave, British 70s crime thrillers, and 90s American indie. it's perfect.

Bravo to Cornyn’s ego for yet again cannibalising the left’s support.

He’s utterly wrong!

It’s even *better* than that!!

*Punch-Drunk Love
Punchdrunk Love is an excellent, excellent film.
Watched JAY KELLY, which I enjoyed bc I like Clooney in everything. But also: kinda wild how Adam Sandler has like a 100% hit rate in serious roles?

A year ago, our lawsuits helped make sure congestion pricing would go into effect on January 1, 2025. Now, the results are clear:

Congestion pricing has resulted in a marked drop in air pollution – not just in Lower Manhattan, but throughout the metro region.
Particulate pollution in the air down a whopping 22% in NYC’s congestion pricing zone.

Not only are the streets less congested, but so are our lungs.

Here's how this will go down:

1) Adversarial attacks on Sora will be unrelenting, putting Disney characters in all kinds of compromising videos

2) These will be a new firehose of slop that fly-by-night content farms will monetize on Facebook & elsewhere

3) Fan backlash will be significant
BREAKING: Disney is making a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, and will allow its iconic characters to be on the company's Sora AI video generator.

Ugh. Proposals to build Wales’ first new national park in 60 years have been rejected.

Cllrs in Powys unanimously rejected the proposed Glyndŵr National Park, a 358sq/m project. They said the area couldn't cope with tourists.

they need to be looking at the rise of attendance at rep houses, and how those theatres have managed to regularly sell out screenings of movies that are old and often readily available to stream

the model isn’t directly scalable, especially not for new releases, but there are plenty of lessons

It's absurd, when you think about it. OpenAI stole Disney's IP. Now it's getting rewarded for it.

Not only does Disney capitulate by allowing Sora to use its IP, but Disney is the one giving money to OpenAI for that privilege.
Disney has struck a 3-yr content licensing partnership with OpenAI.

Sora users will be able to generate short AI videos that draw on more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars characters.

Disney will also make a $1bn equity investment in OpenAI and become a "major customer" of OpenAI.
