I’ve been shifting from quarterly grade pitches to holistic weekly grade assignments based off of a course rubric (similar to contract-based grading). It’s an ever-evolving process to help students reflect and get a gauge on their progress. #ungrading #assessment

I at least startled and entertained some peers! The professor was thoroughly entertained!

In my 1st semester of college (2003!), I had to present in my Introduction to Philosophy course. I was responsible for introducing the class to Socrates.

Being an education major and theatre kid... I opened by singing (a cappella) Socrates's lines that begin "The Tower of Babble" from GODSPELL.
Red and black sketch of a man's face, with voluminous hair. The word GODSPELL in white letters appears over the face and hair.

No particular text, but I used to lean into the classic “Individual versus State” for Antigone and have begun preferring “what happens when everyone is stubborn and digs in?”

Also, Fugard’s The Island is a great paired text, though I’ve use a redacted edit due to content.

Teaching Oedipus and Antigone in a month or so, and want to steep my brain in the most interesting commentary on these plays. Way outside my wheelhouse here. Any recommended books/essays?

People hear all kinds of inaccuracies about where students w/disabilties should apply to college, what happens in the admissions process, & what they can expect at college. In this post, I bust some common myths: https://bit.ly/GFLDCol2

On this day in queer history: October 6, 1998

Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was beaten and left tied to a fence near Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later. His murder became a turning point, inspiring nationwide hate-crime protections.

I had a strong opinion on this but it’s getting stronger as I learn from my own sons’ experiences:

If fear of AI cheating means all major graded writing in high is completed in class, we deprive students of so much opportunity for students to develop as writers.

This handy graphic from the CDC provides a helpful acronym to be an ALLY for people with disabilities.

www.cdc.gov/disability-i...
An acrostic of the word ALLY: Acknowledge and respect individual experiences and abilities. Learn about different disability types. Leverage your influence to promote accessibility and inclusion. Yield the floor to people with disabilities to help identify and eliminate barriers.

Reading Rainbow emphasis is encouraging kids to read. The focus is not on teaching them to read. The mission is reading should be fun!

We are all readers, worthy of literacy. LeVar Burton said “but you don’t have to take my word for it” because he wanted us to look to the books. That’s the beauty 💚

And I’m not saying everything I read that is good has not been intentionally crafted, but instead of just thinking, “Wow! What a a great phrase!”, I now also think, “Did this person write this themselves?”

It was a big victory (not a small one), but my ELA class partner with our Life Skills Support class to play games; socialize; and write, illustrate, and read stories together!

What small victory did you celebrate this week? 💫

I despise how the existence of AI makes me question student writing now more than I did before.

When I see a well-crafted sentence or a well-placed colon, I pause more often than I did before…

When T @marcusluther.bsky.social wants to know how Ss are feeling about his class, he asks!

Check out this monthly survey he shares with learners:
Screenshots of survey includes places for students to rate their experience, a word bank and a place for them to explain their answers. Screenshots of survey includes places for students to rate their experience, a word bank and a place for them to explain their answers.

Research shows that accommodations are only one key to success at college for students with disabilities. Learn what else  helps: https://bit.ly/LDBlog134x

Our 10th graders returned to our Life Skills support classrooms to read the stories they created based on their LSS peers’ ideas. It was wonderful listening to my students read aloud in compelling ways.

Then we got to play games and practice socials skills! #inclusion

LESSON: #Inclusion & Storytelling

Today, our 10th grade ELA class combined with our life skills support (LSS) class. We played Uno, Jenga, Sorry, & puzzles. Then my coteacher & I read a story. Finally, my students asked questions of their LSS peers in small groups to generate a new story.

Today’s English department meeting consisted of reading, annotating, and discussing poems in small groups—because sometimes we just need to talk about words on a page. #poetry

I know independent reading in class should be time where I, too, am reading (to model and to catch up on my own stack), but I also have been needing that time to stay on top of emails, feedback, and paperwork. #TeacherProblems

Banned Books Week starts on Sunday, October 5—there are a ton of ways to support!

Find ways to get involved here: www.ala.org/bbooks/banne...

(If you're overwhelmed, even just checking out, buying, or elevating a banned book is helpful! Talking about them w/ the ppl in your life is an action!)

We’ll return in a couple days to read the stories aloud. The LSS class will be doing some illustrations in the meantime. We’ll end by returning to some games and social time.

My coteacher and I are already planning a return learning experience!
