Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

I noticed yesterday over in the "prose authors" section of BlueSky they're also talking about this and the answer is "most authors have day jobs."
Lots of good talk lately about how making comics is funded. Do you have a spouse with a good job? Family money? A supportive national arts culture?

OR

Maybe you the cartoonist is the one with the fulltime job? This is something I don't see talked about a lot and it's the position I'm in. So... 1/

Continuing from @pioneerpress.bsky.social article above.

1) When cops/agents attack calm politicians and reporters, you know something is wrong.

2)The apparent level of violence on display is alarming. What happened right before this arrest that requires immediate hospitalization?

This is why OpenAI is selling so aggressively to education at all levels—they want to create entire generations of users incapable of reading, writing and thinking without ChatGPT to hold their hands

And teachers and professors should call this out for what it actually is
To bear out this rosy projection, HSBC assumes that OpenAI will become "as ubiquitous [...] as Microsoft 365" (345mm users worldwide) while bringing in 10x the number of users (3bn).

I love the solution of combining two ideas that aren't quite there. Your ideas/concepts don't always have to stand alone!
Early drawings of Ollie! The first two are for a different pitch about a girl who adopts a hedgehog. I wanted her design and personality to also be hedgie-like.

I shared that with my agent alongside an autobio idea that wasn't quite working. She said, "well, what if you combined them?"

Here's a tip: you shouldn't be running a business if you can't (or don't want to) pay your staff (freelancers, etc.) a liveable wage.

What sort of a person carries water for an acknowledged murderer? What benefit do you get from that? If you plan and carry out a brutal murder of an innocent person that should be the first thing ever mentioned about you for the rest of time.
Assuming this is related to Ben Smith I was honestly shocked by this, an astonishing bit of bootlicking from top to bottom

Math is knowledge. Knowledge is power.

30k is also way WAYYYY too low. IMHO, anything less than 50k for a 200 page full color book is highway robbery.

So if you have to get robbed to get published (and self pub isn't an option)...at least make something you love, okay?

As a direct comparison, my wife is a picture book author/illustrator. My advance for EXTRA LARGE (208 pages, 18+ months of work) was about the same as she typically gets for a 32-page book that she'll finish in 3-4 months.

The math doesn't make sense.
"Let’s say 20 years ago the rate for a page of pencils was $150. People still get paid that."

My work is largely in the book market, buuuut yeah.

BOOM! recently reached out to offer an IP gig with the following rates:
script $50/page, pencils&inks $150/pg, colors $50/pg
The one about comic book page rates – again. News flash: Comic book page rates are STILL stagnant, after all these years, and for indie cartoonists it's even harder

If you ever want to see more of something you read but don't feel like you can do anything about it because you're not an influencer or a publisher or a journalist, even just leaving a five star review online moves the needle. Even telling a friend "you'd like this too"!

Did a roundtable workshop at the @ncte.org conference where I presented this lesson on making a mini comic as a simple and disarming way to get students into storytelling and writing, along with a few suggested prompts. Link in bio! Download a print-quality PDF for use in your classrooms.

Phones also default to having every notification on, constantly asking for your attention. Turn them all off!
People will say it's the lack of enforcement, and that's a factor, but we also have technology to limit phone use while driving and our automakers and leaders refuse to implement it. It's a choice to allow distracted driving. And all the deaths and injuries that result are because of that choice.
We’ve 100% lost the war on using phones while driving and it’s the worst.

Find out who they are, charge them, convict them. Please.
ICE's actions in Minnesota this last week are deeply disturbing. Masked agents in Northfield pulled a father out of a car at gunpoint and arrested him in front of his son. After, ICE claimed he attempted to drive over agents despite the fact that he was in the passenger seat.
