📚NEW INTRO POST📚

I'm a Minneapolis-based cartoonist and educator. I've cartooned about my experiences growing up with #ADHD in RAISED ON RITALIN and BUTTON PUSHER.

My newest book, EXTRA LARGE, deals with bullying, body image issues, and gendered expectations.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

For whoever needs to hear this: a PNG is *not* a PDF.

Well the Becka doorknockers are at it. Apparently they can’t read English, “No soliciting.”

Sigh.

She looks so reasonable on paper…

Happy book birthday!

I don't know if I can squint that hard!
It's revolting because it isn't "just" speech. Therapy is treatment! It has concrete, behavior-based outcomes as an expectation. Saying this is okay is like the saying a cyanide pill every morning is good for you or that Tylenol causes autism...
andrewkarre.bsky.social
I can squint and imagine a 1st Amendment rationale for any form of talk therapy as protected speech. But in the present context of rampant erosion of free speech—particularly the speech of marginalized folks—the idea of drawing a protective line around this vile and harmful speech is revolting.

So, it may soon be entirely possible for "therapists" to practice an ineffective and homophobic therapy on minors under the protection of the 1st Amendment. Meanwhile, teachers will have no such free speech in their classrooms, and kids will have no access to books about queer people in libraries.

This is an amazing, very in-depth explainer of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the most inscrutable / powerful government in Minnesota. If you want to learn a ton about the politics of the MPRB, which has a $150M budget (!), check it out.

i think we are going to find out at some point these guys invented cocaine 2 and have been on it all along
Buried in Altman's post is the real story: "People are generating much more than we expected per user," using massive compute resources on content that's often being generated for very small audiences (it is, after all, a social media app). OpenAl will "have to somehow make money for video generation," Altman wrote. Translation: Sora is burning through compute costs with no offsetting revenue.
Altman floated a potential solution: "We are going to try sharing some of this revenue with rightsholders who want their characters generated by users." The idea-perhaps similar to You Tube's ad-monetization program for videos that include copyrighted material
-would give studios a financial incentive to opt in.
"The exact model will take some trial and error to figure out," Altman acknowledged, "but we plan to start very soon."

Honestly I’d say it’s 4 or 5 times as much work.
johannamation.bsky.social
Comics/graphic novels aren’t recognized or taken seriously as literature in the publishing industry, despite taking twice as much work to create as prose novels, and it just breaks my heart.

That’s it, that’s the take.

Please read more comics.

Anyone have a particularly hot comic take?

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Might! I had to find a tiny button sized magnet I double side taped to the front, opposite the camera. The noise you hear is from the lens trying focus repeatedly.

If it’s an iPhone you might be able to fix it by sticking a tiny magnet on the front of your phone!

You know a Mpls mayoral election is around the corner when the MPD/State Patrol helicopters are circling around South Mpls with their fascism birds & propeller megaphones screaming “crime is happening!”

When the real crime is all the ways cops make themselves both the perpetrators and the victims.
tylerpage.bsky.social
Absolutely.

I don't see it much but yesterday I witnessed Park staff who left a gator utility vehicle and an F150 parked right in the middle of the ped path in front of the Lake Hiawatha building.

This is what Minneapolis Parks staff should be using for trail maintenance, at least April through October. The heavy trucks damage the trails because they're not built for that much weight.

Bikes can do so many more things than most people think. Today’s wonderful example is Carla Cargo’s feature on @mountvernontrail.org’s bike-based volunteer trail maintenance work. www.carlacargo.de/heroes/carla...

ER doc here! This is a lie. Wait times are up because the American healthcare system is an unsustainable business model and a for-profit national healthcare system just doesn’t work. These problems will continue to get worse until we change that system. It literally has nothing to do with immigrants

Vance: "If you're an American citizen & you've been to the hospital in the last few years, you've probably noticed wait times are especially large & very often somebody who's there in the ER is an illegal alien. Why do those people get healthcare benefits at hospitals paid for by American citizens?"

The White House is engaging in direct extortion of local and state governments, attempting to force them to change their policies by stopping funding projects that already have signed grant agreements with the federal government.

New: WH says it has put about $18 billion in infrastructure projects in New York City on hold "to ensure funding is not flowing based on unconstitutional DEI principles." Russ Vought, the budget director, specifically cited the Hudson Tunnel Project and the Second Ave Subway.

I keep thinking about this piece. It feels so odd to have someone put into words what I suspected. I think the ideal authors for current publishing's standards are influencers/celebrities: built-in audience, unrelated income streams, someone else does their PR/comments moderation, willing to shill

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...
