...I can't put a price on how valuable it was to meet all of those artists and creative practitioners and just absorb the creative culture of a city like New York.

If you ever want to see more of something you read but don't feel like you can do anything about it because you're not an influencer or a publisher or a journalist, even just leaving a five star review online moves the needle. Even telling a friend "you'd like this too"!

Also - don't be shy about asking your peers about their situations. You don't necessarily have to get into $$$ specifics. And be open yourself - figure out what you're comfortable sharing and put it out there. //

If writing and drawing comics and telling stories is what you love and you absolutely *have* to do it, you will find a way to make it work.

(Though it would also be great if the US did that artist stipend thing like Ireland is now adopting across the board.) 10/

creative career, and how there are also a variety of ways to work in education or the arts. I make sure to point out how, when someone learns you've published a book that you must be rich, this isn't true for 99% of artists, authors, and cartoonists. Knowing what you're getting into is helpful. 9/
