"The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic was a litmus test people in the U.S. failed miserably, and we’re all still reeling from it. The results revealed to the ruling powers just how much they could get away with."

YES!!!!!!! you cannot leave your community behind and then be confused when you get lost

COVID-19 has revealed that much of the US public is willing to accept mass death and abandonment. We were pushed by propaganda to see many around us as disposable. That helped set the tone for current fascist violations. I wrote about it for @prismreports.org.

Another way out: Building resistance when passivity is the norm
The COVID-19 pandemic should have shown us that we’re supposed to be meeting needs, not falling in line behind fascist incursions

I wore my “Jews say let Gaza live” shirt at HSB. I assume the huge number of fist bumps and thumbs up I received in response from San Francisco folk music fans are representative of American public opinion as a whole.

When the host or platform "fact-checks" or offers an opposing point of view without simply quoting "one side says this and one side says that" is very revealing of their ideological orientation.

Today in media bias: I was listening to NPR Morning Edition. They had on a Palestinian human rights lawyer who said "why should Palestinians have to negotiate an end to genocide?" The host, unprompted, said "while many human rights groups and a UN committee say it's a genocide, Israel denies this."

This will be unequivocally the greatest thing since sliced bread. @natogreen.bsky.social is the most eminently quotable labor organizer in the game, and I cannot wait to read this.

BIG NEWS. I’M WRITING A BOOK. What if there was a book that tried to teach people how to build strong unions, but make it funny?

Now it’s official on socials so I have to write it or @haymarketbooks.org will chain me to my desk until it’s done. Can’t wait to share it with you all.

It wouldn’t have happened without you, bub.

The big news tonight is two-fold — Trump's "domestic terrorism" memorandum and James Comey's reported indictment — and both are signs that Trump's authoritarianism is here. Now.

Both situations, though, show how weak Trump actually is.

That will be coming tonight, at Law Dork: www.lawdork.com

In 1935 German leadership called a surprise meeting and informed their previous oath to uphold the Weimar constitution was now void and they instead must swear a personal oath to the Führer. Many claimed they didn’t like the order, but they did it anyway.

A fun fact about McCarthyism is that just two and a half years after he was condemned and censured, Sen. Joseph McCarthy drank himself to death at 48.

Fevers break. Petty tyrants fall. Censorship and persecution drive good people to stand together and fight back.
After his condemnation and censure, McCarthy continued to perform his senatorial duties for another two and a half years. His career as a major public figure, however, had been ruined. His colleagues in the Senate avoided him; his speeches on the Senate floor were delivered to a near-empty chamber or received with intentional and conspicuous displays of inattention.

The press that had once recorded his every public statement now ignored him, and outside speaking engagements dwindled almost to nothing. Eisenhower, finally freed of McCarthy's political intimidation, quipped to his Cabinet that McCarthyism was now
"McCarthywasm". McCarthy died in the Bethesda Naval Hospital on May 2, 1957, at the age of 48. His death certificate listed the cause of death as "Hepatitis, acute, cause
unknown"; previously doctors had not reported him to be in critical condition. It was hinted in the press that he died of alcoholism (cirrhosis of the liver), an estimation that is now accepted by modern biographers. Thomas C.
Reeves argues that he effectively died by suicide.

I do not believe that Democrats can recover by accepting bad faith dishonest right wing bigotry as legitimate. This is not an issue they can triangulate and compromise their way out of.

I would love for a single democrat to reckon with the fact that conservatives are not in fact motivated by reasonable concerns. They are — just as they were with ‘concerns’ over blacks and gays and numerous other minorities over the last five decades — motivated by bigotry.

When workers go through struggle and learn what it means to fight, those lessons get applied to the next thing. The right wing isn't used to fighting people who are ready and willing to be fight back. They will RUE THE DAY.

Sometimes authoritarian regimes overreach, and the attack on Kimmel by the Trump gang and right-wing media companies like Sinclair may be such a time. The WGA had a 148 day strike against some of the biggest corporations in the world. SAG-AFTRA had a strike. They won.
