a love letter to our transgender friends This Thursday, the Texas Bathroom Bill goes into effect. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be continually be told there isn’t a place for you anywhere in this world. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be used continually as a scapegoat to frighten an electorate so propagandized into fear that even oppressed people can be miscast as ontological threats. Like many people, I was born into a simpler time when gender was seen as inherently binary. When a baby was born, like everyone else, I asked “is it a boy or a girl.” I was unaware that I was going to treat the child differently depending on that answer. I was like my black and white television set. Beautiful colors came across as grey. Beauty outside my monochrome bubble felt like a threatening blur. Then, when I was in seminary, I worked for a time as a student chaplain. One day, in the surgeon’s library, I spotted a huge book and was drawn by curiosity to see what such a large book was about. It turned out the giant book was on surgical techniques for infants born between the male and female binary. The entire tome was about people who did not fit in my binary understanding of gender. I was thunderstruck. If intersex people are born that way, I could not say their traits were “unnatural.” They were as natural as I was. And these were just the observable physical traits. I had no way of knowing what was happening chemically in ways that could not be seen. I realized my arrogance in judging other people. More importantly, I realized the violence inherent in trying to reduce humankind to my simplistic binary ethics. Charlie Kirk liked to try erase the reality of intersex and transgender people by asking “What is a woman?” That question can distract us from an even more basic question, “What is a human being? If we cannot see a person’s humanity we will be unable to resolve issues of race, class and gender. Before we can resolve ethical dilemmas we must first know what rights EVERY person deserves simply because they are human. So, before the bathroom bill goes into effect, I want to send out a love letter to the beautiful people of Texas who do not fit in the simplistic religious and political stupors that now grip our beautiful state like a skeletal hand from the past. As a minister in Christ’s church I want to tell you, just like Jesus told the scapegoats of his time, do not let religious and political bullies define you. You are a sacred gift to the world. You do not need anyone else’s approval to be fully who you are. Do not look at yourself through anyone else’s eyes. Live in your own skin, see through own eyes, love through your own heart. You are a gift to the world simply because of who you are. You are the light of the world. Do not let these political and religious bullies convince you to live in the shadows. Let the light of your true humanity shine for all to see.

I’ve made The Appointment for Phineas, tomorrow morning. He got through Thanksgiving with smiles and wags and ball chasing, slowed down perceptibly yesterday, and is now staggering and crying loudly every time he stands up. It was a good year in remission. It was a good life.

The origin of ‘cake’ is actually dense bread. Egyptians added honey, but what we make today derives a lot from the 18th century Genoa ‘sponge.’ Professor Nicola Humble writes that, given its permutations and symbolism, “cake is an idea.” Hard to eat one of those. Maybe… nothing is cake?
