On this day, Feb 14, in 1990, Voyager 1, then 6,055 million kilometers, (3,762 million miles) from Earth took this photo.

And Carl Sagan wrote some beautiful words (rest of thread).

That's a Giant Kelp holdfast or base clinging to rocks on a shallow part of a reef. The mass migration of urchins seeking food is called an "urchin stampede". The holdfast is only a fraction of the mass of a kelp stand so this behavior is very destructive. This happens when their predators are gone.

A row of seabirds stitches the sky,
black thread over blue.
Below, the sea keeps breathing in slow swallows of salt.
They fly like a message I can’t unsend,
clean, reckless, together.
If you came now, I’d open like wind
and let your name migrate through me.

Brutal.
Dangerously cold temperatures continue across the eastern half of the country. In some places this could be the longest duration of cold in several decades.

Last week on the trail, I found one of my favorite quiet miracles.

These are Pipevine flowers — easy to miss, blooming before the leaves arrive, long before most things wake up.

They’re part of a remarkable relationship that eventually gives rise to the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly.
