This is, at best, five years late to the party

The lede is buried halfway through this piece when the author admits that Weiss is a 'close friend'

This is really smart. Amazed at the hysteria over the ascendance of a woman entrepreneur who clearly knows how to cover and sell news and who's not afraid to take on a mob. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

'Bucking tradition and legal precedent, President Trump has taken to executing suspected gang members on the White House lawn with a sawn-off shotgun, before marking his cabinet with their blood, due to what he says is rampant crime and to support his crackdown on illegal immigration'

President Trump is bucking tradition and legal precedent in pushing to deploy the National Guard to Democratic-led cities like Portland, Oregon, and Chicago due to what he says is rampant crime and to support his crackdown on illegal immigration.

Resharing this piece I wrote for @bylinetimes.bsky.social two years ago on Tories promising to leave the ECHR as the characters may have changed but the argument hasn't

Tl;dr- leaving is dumb, but doesn't mean it won't happen

If Labour really wanted to be transformative, abolishing sisyphean inquiries that go on for longer than the crises would be a good place to start

💙💜💗Yesterday was a BIG day for CVF at the UK Covid Inquiry.

After a year of work, @larawong.bsky.social’s full written statement (much longer than her oral evidence) is now public.

You can also watch her full oral evidence on YouTube.

Highlights below.

Good, maybe the median voter will reconsider their view when told it's racist

Just as the state contemplates the possibility of a fully-funded assisted dying service, public funding for the award-winning Arthur Rank House Hospice in Cambridge is being cut by almost £1 million pa, risking the closure of nearly half of its in-patient unit. www.arhc.org.uk/protectourca...

Not only did Susstein say this, he wrote it in a book he presumably reread at least once

Are we pretending that passing constitutional muster is a genuine standard still?
anthonymkreis.bsky.social
This does not meet constitutional muster. California cannot prosecute federal officials for conduct in the course of their official duties. It cannot define what is an essential part of federal law enforcement's work.

As policy, police masking is anti-democratic, but it requires a federal response.

Breaking News: Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation that prohibits federal immigration agents from wearing masks in California.

To be fair, being dragged off a plane and arrested catapulted him right back into prominence

Yes, but you being present and active on a site plays a part in keeping that site present and active. If you think that a few conversations with French economists who are presumably on email is a worthwhile trade, then fair enough

Useful reminder of why I cancelled my subscription. And who is Oli Dugmore?

The only coherent thing this group of toothless imbeciles was interested in chanting was 'Starmer's a wanker'.

You've got to wonder when he realises he can never go far enough to the right
nicholasrl.bsky.social
What, by promoting coups and stoking intolerance?

You can condemn the way Kirk was killed without condoning what he was and what he did

And I think anyone whipping out the 'judges don't use gavels' or 'it's the wrong wig' is missing the wood for the trees

Yes, it's Banksy who is responsible the coarsening of public debate, not the government or the racists chanting outside asylum hotels

Sure, the Reps will appoint three lickspittles, but then they won't even be able to pretend at legitimacy any more

You've got to wonder when the liberals on the court realise they're doing nothing but legitimising a corrupt, partisan body and resign

Justice Sotomayor, not mincing words, also says that today's decision will lead to the "creation of [] a second-class citizenship status" for Latinos, who now will have the burden to "carry enough documentation to prove that they deserve to walk freely."
The concurrence relegates the interests of U. S. citizens
and individuals with legal status to a single sentence, positing that the Government will free these individuals as
soon as they show they are legally in the United States.
Ante, at 8 (opinion of KAVANAUGH, J.). That blinks reality.
Two plaintiffs in this very case tried to explain that they
are U. S. citizens; one was then pushed against a fence with
his arms twisted behind his back, and the other was taken away from his job to a warehouse for further questioning. More fundamentally, it is the Government’s burden to prove that it has reasonable suspicion to stop someone. The concurrence improperly shifts the burden onto an entire class of citizens to carry enough documentation to prove that they deserve to walk freely. The Constitution does not permit the creation of such a second-class citizenship status.
