The indo columnist who argued that women were making too much of a fuss about groping is currently in my mentions on LinkedIn arguing for more forced treatment and fewer rights safeguards and I am being so well behaved in ignoring her.

So ... the government just forced us all to have referendums on *existing* Māori wards because Local Communities Deserve Choice, but now they're unilaterally abolishing our regional councils because they don't like the Choices we made?

As a teenager I remember watching the Sinn Fein and the DUP coalition form in the North. Those on opposite sides of the troubles governing together after decades of violence.

It wasn't as surprising as this united front.

As a fairly-femme middle-aged cis-woman I get read as a teenage boy about once a week.

While the harm to me is minimal* and barely an inconvenience compared to what trans people face, it is still scary looking at countries arguing for more policing of gender.

*mostly it annoys my wife.

I will be the first to admit I couldn’t understand why anyone would oppose Assisted Dying… and then I became disabled and had it “offered” to me.

It’s not compassionate when there’s coercion.

It’s not dignified when it’s offered in lieu of care.

Listen to disabled people.

In Ireland, more properties were bought this year by landlords than by people hoping to live in them. Mostly large landlords, not the sainted mom and pops of it all. People who already own tens or hundreds of properties bought even more of them. They're not fleeing the market, they're destroying it.

That's your "I inherited a house" or "I owned and then moved in with a partner" type scenario and the RTB's own data shows that that is *not* the majority of rental scenarios. The majority is landlords owning 3+ properties and often a great many more than that. LET THEM LEAVE.

In good news-the birds in my garden are obnoxiously loud.

It feels like the bird population has doubled since I moved in 2 years ago.

Recently,I have started to regularly spot tauhou, kākā and kererū.

I heard kiwi. In the capital!

Many disabled kids would benefit so much if parenting classes that focus on disability inclusion and the harms of ableism were widely available (so, free) to their parents.

I had been very reluctant to upgrade my phone, but my new one has more mobility and dexterity access settings that are real game changers - including being able to stop it (seemingly) from recognising my tremor as separate taps.

I think a huge part of my Mom's activism when I was a kid was focused on the idea that other families wouldn't have to go through what we did to get support, but everything I see suggests childhood disability supports are worse now.

When I interned at a trade union in the states (in the year of still had a flip phone) I went into the GC's office because after looking everywhere I couldn't find the maternity leave legislation, just a family medical leave act that couldn't be the only one...
A couple weeks ago a friend was telling me about someone she knew who had been on maternity leave, and said she had taken "the full year." I said, "A whole year? Wow, what kind of fancy job does she have that gives her a YEAR of leave?" and my friend looked surprised & said, "... welcome to Canada?"

Today, 144 years ago, 1600 Crown troops invaded a pacifist settlement that was the centre of resistance against British colonialism. The leaders were arrested, the settlement sacked, the people violated.

For many in Aotearoa, November 5th is Parihaka Day, or Te Rā o te Pāhua: The Day of Plunder.

Tomorrow is the Fifth of November – but let’s forget Guy Fawkes and his actions against an arrogant Protestant king and instead look to our own history: the unlawful attack on Parihaka and, by extension, Māori sovereignty.
