My first thought is Carpenter's THE THING (no sex, stylized violence, genuinely creepy) but he's probably a little too young. So how about THE FOG, which is atmospheric and deliberate but also has ghosts with swords jumping out at people?

I can see the appeal of focusing on the career professionals, absolutely -- most of ZERO DARK THIRTY takes place during the George W. Bush era, after all -- but I find it a stretch to imagine a reality where the President isn't just competent and engaged but physically robust.
