The cost-benefit approach to counterinsurgency can be a cruel mistress, particularly when no amount of cost inflicted upon the occupied population is capable of outweighing the perceived benefit of the occupier not being there.

the state's unparalleled coercive apparatus, its fundamental violence, is good at hiding itself: for some people, it's never visible; for other people, it's constant in ways that are deliberately framed as their fault--and pointing it out like this is an important part of crisis education right now.
Sayre: "My background is in international humanitarian response in conflict zones in Yemen, Haiti, Syria, Iraq, and Ukraine. What I've seen here is what I've seen there. A powerful entity violently and intentionally terrorizing people."

@anjalikdayal.bsky.social have you met the moss chickens?
In the eternal struggle between kakapo and towel, the towel remain triumphant. Towels left in the wild by careless hitchhikers are a contributor to the kakapo's dwindling numbers. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBnj...

@violanorth.bsky.social I just think this is an album you should be involved with in some way
a surprising amount of older U.S. music is about how great your city is and I'd like to see a more muted civic tone, songs like "I'd Quite Like to Be Back in Buffalo," or "Des Moines Is Perfectly Fine."
