I can not stress this enough:

1) The Telegraph misrepresents our paper (“inactivate within an hour”)

2) They claim this discredits the zero-covid community

3) They ignore our much more impactful follow-up article that contradicts their claim

"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.
Listen to all of it!

our emotional & practical survival over the next year is going to depend on us developing the emotional depth to say "hahaha fuck yeah, shit has gotten so bad that even [terrible person] is trying to save themselves" without being like "so they're not terrible anymore, maybe?"
You do not in fact gotta hand it to Mitt Binders Full of Women Romney!!!

in case anyone else has been super fucking frustrated trying to parse all the fallout and discourse surrounding this, none of which actually specifies who it was (why?????)
But the reason the conversation is happening this way is because Mary Robinette Kowal disclosed that in 2022-23she used AI to write around 50 words of a novel as an epigraph.

We created fire. You can't put it back in the box. Fire is here to stay. That's why all of our houses have to be made of fire. And we need to write all of our messages in fire. And all the fire has to be owned by the worst people on the planet

I have one of these but each cord is coiled up with a twist tie and labeled with masking tape and organized into categories in ziploc baggies which I think makes me Neurodivergent Dad
this is the greatest feeling, when the cord box proves its utility to a family member

the conclusion I must draw from this is a number of the decision makers high up at the NY Times have their own Epstein pictures waiting in the wings and so want to act like it's not a big deal
Statement from the NYT, which is useful context, but still feel like you gotta mention it in the column!

This is the most interesting thing I've seen in ages. If intra-cellular membrane-less hydrogen ion gradients are biologically meaningful/useful things then so too might be membrane-less gradients of everything else - from bigger ions with discrete point-sources through protein complexes.
Organelles do NOT have a single uniform pH.
And if you think they must, because “protons diffuse fast,” this paper is for you.
A thread on why that assumption is wrong; and what we found instead. 🧵 1/n

Here in Kansas people said about KS SB 180 "oh there is no way it'll pass"

It passed and now I am legally banned from ANY gendered restroom, so uh, at this point I might not trust people's assessments about which bills are "never going to pass"
This is possibly the most significant attack on trans rights in this country yet, and I can count the number of posts on my timeline about this on my hands.

If you're trying to dismiss this thinking "It'll die in the senate," DON'T! Sound the alarms now!
Bluesky tonight is neatly divided between trans people and family members appropriately angry and freaking out and everyone else who has barely noticed.

I am FLABBERGASTED by that Snapchat number. I genuinely did not know it still existed
Teens turn to a variety of online platforms, but YouTube continues to stand out. Roughly nine-in-ten teens report ever using it. TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat are the next most widely used platforms.

Every few years there's a bunch of "pivot to video" discourse about how creatives should all start making videos instead of doing text-based work. And every few years we discover again that the supposed "popularity" of video is based on fake audience numbers created by the video platforms.

I think if you're sitting right on the glass next to the visiting bench and you get caught on the broadcast during the third period of a tied game staring at your phone DURING A FUCKING PENALTY SHOT you should be legally required to give up your seat to someone who will fucking appreciate it

T and I painted a posterboard to look like water, intending to use it as a background for something else, but we liked how it looked so much we just hung it up on the wall. very calming and peaceful, and I like that we did it together :)

The older I get, the more my politics mature from childish, naïve beliefs like "the world is complicated and leaders have to make hard decisions" to more serious, adult principles like "hurting people is bad and helping people is good."
