Making it digital-only is a red line for many who support the concept of ID cards (incl me, living in EU, and finding them v useful). Digital is unnecessarily costly, complex, risky, non-inclusive, with a live example in EUSS of the problems of having a key official document in digital-only format.

If I were the leader of the opposition a year after an election, facing an unpopular government, I would simply focus my energy on criticising the current government's policy record rather than constantly bemoaning the last fifteen years of policymaking, in which I was intimately involved.
