I got a Twitter DM from the publisher of a book by Jeffrey Haas (Fred Hampton's lawyer) that I'd recommended in a thread that went viral, thanking me for the unexpected spike in sales. I'm sure we're talking dozens, not hundreds, but they were like doing highkey internet sleuthing to figure it out!
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Since search is dead, how soon do you think Google Scholar is headed for the Google Graveyard? I'm betting it's soon, and academia is NOT prepared

After one of the worst acts of racial terror in our history, *we erased it.*

We didn't teach it.

We didn't take anyone to trial.

Police records disappeared.

So did newspaper archives.

The silence continued until 2020, when people, you could say, woke up.

I really wonder how Carville splits the hair between "Yay, Mamdani!" and "Woke = bad."
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

"It is abundantly clear even to me that the Democratic Party must now run on the most populist economic platform since the Great Depression," James Carville writes.
Opinion | James Carville: Out With Woke. In With Rage.
Democrats also have to shed the last vestiges of woke.

Being vulgar isn’t the goal of roasting. EARNING CAMARADERIE IS THE POINT. You display the empathy to accurately asses others’ vulnerabilities, the craft to make fun at them without destroying underlying respect for their humanity, and you earn satisfaction of earning their esteem.

The mystery aspect of S1 was always secondary to me. I was much more drawn in by watching various characters make real human connections. I've watched six of eight episodes of S2 and so far, I'm having the same feeling. I've been especially intrigued by seeing Julie learn to connect with her mom.

Trump is a creature of media before anything else and I suspect one thing we're seeing in this (wild!) Mamdani meeting is that nothing impresses/intimidates him like someone capable of generating a competing media phenomenon

I'll admit to getting annoyed anytime I come across a list or conversation about GOAT rap groups that doesn't include De La Soul. They are the foundation of so much of what the past 40 years of rap music IS and they don't get enough credit for that.
