So depressing to have to check www.sewagemap.co.uk every time before swimming.

The L-cysteine desulfidase CyuA, acquired by Methanococcales and other archaea via horizontal gene transfer, employs a [4Fe-4S] cluster to catalyze cysteine desulfuration, and a [4Fe-5S] intermediate ...

If they pretend they haven’t heard about the story of the day, end the interview right there.

Good thread on why trying to control the size of the human population is at best unlikely to have a significant impact this century and at worst a Trojan horse for racism and eugenics.
1. I hate to see good people wasting their time and energy. And there’s perhaps no greater waste of time and energy than seeking to change the trajectory of the human population. It’s not just futile, but also a massive distraction from things we CAN change. This thread seeks to explain why. 🧵1/12

Artomyces pyxidatus, the Crown-tipped Coral or Candelabra Coral fungus, was not seen in the UK over the entire 20th century, its last record in 1886 until a spate of recent findings around 2022, which is when I found this specimen (in East Kent). Where did it disappear all this time?

There is surprisingly more work on what bioturbation does to organic matter in the sediment than the other way around. I'd think we'd be a least a bit more interested in why animals bother putting energy into going into the muck.
Prob. missing a good number of biological studies because of terms. ⚒️

Fantastic to see a renewed committment to peatland restoration in Wales. We have collaborated on many of these sites, including Cors Caron and Crymlyn Bog, and are looking forward to future work.

Here’s the thing, emerging scientists aren’t going to flee to do science elsewhere…they just won’t do the science.

We will lose at least one, if not two generations of knowledge if we don’t get this shit sorted out immediately.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

🧵🧪 There is a lot of truth in this optimistic assessment. The energy transition is indeed accelerating at a rate beyond expectations, but it could still be too little too late. We are racing past the Paris 1.5°C threshold into territory where we know dangerous tipping points lie.
‘It’s the shape of story across all ages and human cultures. You’re in a hole. Then you get out.’

The climate crisis hole is hot, dark and we’re still in it.

But Prof Jules Pretty describes how we’re beginning to get out. There is good news…
After COP30, what now? It’s actually good news

Our results show that these compounds support carbon and energy metabolism in the Olavius algarvensis symbiosis.
