If you're wondering whether the "open letter about AI" on file 770 is worth reading and engaging, it is not. The whole thing is rhetorical mush so it was no surprise when I got to the end and she admitted "her" letter was itself written by AI. Useless bait.

Actually let me add: we like to think machines and software will be free of bias and prejudice, but that's illusory. Machines are designed by humans (yep even the so called "AI") so machines are bound to replicate that bias and prejudice, *esp* if we're unaware of said bias.
Ok so
The headline is a bit misleading. AI shows racist bias in that psychiatric model (not surprising)
The slides issue is more complex--the AI detects markers that are correlated with race and then can't diagnose because it's been trained on too many white ppl (1/?)

At last the foxes arrive. Two dozen of them, the ruddy-gold ones from the East, and those with ink-black faces from the West. They surround you in a chorus of excited yips and pull you down into the snow with sharp teeth. When you rise, it’s on four legs, aching with joy, ready to run with them.

Going into 2026, a reminder for everyone who's fallen off the creative wagon, game dev, writing, art, music, whatever, no matter how long:

After an evening of friends and mead and a glut of food, you meander from room to room, tidying the remnants your guests left behind: tufts of fur, stringy scraps of moss and lichen, a handful of lost bells that spill moonlight when they ring.

Just before twilight, you hang shallow feeders along your eaves, fill them with honey, and wait with held breath. Soon a sound like tiny church bells makes your heart swell, as one tiny nyn first appears, then more. Like dragonfly-mice, their stained glass wings glow golden as they drink.

“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

Please don't let the fear of not doing something well stop you from trying it for the first time. Write a messy story. Paint a crappy flower. Whittle the worst wooden bear of all time.

The best gift you can give yourself is to have fun and grow.

I see people using AI and it makes me sad. I see people sending me AI and it makes me angry.
If you’re using AI to write your stories or create your art, you’re robbing yourself. I don’t have to let you rob me or Kaleidotrope’s readers.

After a heavy snow, you find a bundle on your back step: bark pieces carved with recipes in shaky writing, and a coin as large as your palm. The yard and beyond are oddly silent, but when you pick up the coin, you hear a faint chorus of cheers. You laugh softly; looks like you’re baking today.

I paused, out of breath. The Void had taken all my frustrated screaming and absorbed it.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "You must have heard all this before, countless times."

'only you,' said the Void, 'scream your frustration like you do'

I took a deep breath to resume, then smiled.

"Thanks."

Ostensibly a lot of the book is about toxic masculinity but this character is like "I would say more that the WORLD IS TOXIC and I happen to be a masculine IN IT and if it could stop doing this that would be lovely thank you very much" also "Oh God I need a cup of tea I can't deal with this"
