Tardy #QOTD for May 27, 2023, is from #SummerMeditations by #VaclavHavel. The US needs a leader like Havel, a playwright and peaceful dissident during communism, then a reluctant first President of post communism Czechoslovakia. Not a complete turd like #Trump.
If you were the current version of Daniel Ellsberg and you had today's equivalent of The Pentagon Papers (I think we can imagine what they might be) and wanted to release them, would you go to any of the remaining major American newspapers to do so? Sadly, the answer is definitely not.
Thanks. 100% agree about The Guardian and ProPublica. The problem with NYT, WaPo, WSJ (and LA Times) is how opinion bleeds into news analysis. The way news is framed, which stories are deemed worthy, and what is left out of coverage elide truth to the extent that we don’t even have a shared reality.
Back in 2015-2016, I can remember supposedly good journalists, one of whom happened to go to my alma mater, saying stuff like "Well, the Trump people say that 2+2 = 5" and practically wanting to slit my wrists. Please, journalists, call terrible human beings what they are.
The conventions of political reporting today are not well equipped to handle this concerted use of pretexts for instrumental purposes and the bottomless bad faith they employ. Grasping the industrial-scale deception at the core of MAGA politics is essential. 6/

Mine was an easy pick--but also hard since there were so many to choose from in HOPE IN THE DARK by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social:

We write history with our feet and with our presence and our collective voice and vision.

(For the record, I don't believe Biden was addled -- all the "autopen" stuff is RW paranoic nonsense -- but the point still stands: a Dem Party running on automatic will just keep helping people & boosting the economy. A GOP running on automatic devolves toward fascism.)
The fact that a single person so much as contemplated voting for Trump in 2016 was almost enough for me to lose all faith in humanity. He speaks for all of 5 seconds, and one can tell he has the intellect of a gnat and as much humanity as an amoeba.
“I’m really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell.”

To the people of the world who wonder if there are Americans who grasp how mad he is: There are. We can see it. We are working to mobilize our people to oppose him and his dangerous regime.
I call my 3 month old golden retriever pup, with love of course, "My little piranha." Goodness, her mouthiness. But like her predecessor, who was just as mouthy at that age, she is going to be a great one.

This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

What centrist libs can't seem to internalize is that the US contains a large, longstanding, well-funded political movement that *wants political violence and authoritarianism*. It does not need to be provoked in any way in order to pursue those goals.

Just thinking about how the right made up an entirely fictional left wing character that resulted in so many bomb threats and the like and nobody will face consequences. But people on the left who accurately clocked the victim’s life work lost jobs.

- you clean up that banksy?
- sure did, your honour, leaving a perfect, permanent outline, imbuing the work with real fuckin gravitas while making its point better than the artist did himself just like you asked
They erased the new Banksy mural in London. But the stain remains.

Interesting to see if this one gets the protection usually afforded to Banksy works

I used to read books like Lord of the Rings or watch movies like Star Wars and think the villains were unbelievable. And of course, now watching the tech oligarchs (who could not spend all their money if they tried) destroy civilization for power, I’m like, guess I was wrong. People are that awful.

We want to apologize if it feels like we’ve been venting a lot lately. It’s just hard to ignore that nearly every move from this administration seems to be illegal, unlawful, or outright unconstitutional and yet nothing happens.
Please treat it like you are cross examining a murderer. Except treat him with less respect.

Every country has the same basic spectrum of people, the same basic psychologies. The people who empowered Trump are the same people who brought Pinochet to Chile, Duterte to The Philippines, Mussolini to Italy, Trujillo to the Dominican Republic, and, yes, Hitler to Germany. #AmericanFascists
