This is an excellent summary by someone who has extensive knowledge of this stuff. Highlight recommend both this one and his previous post.

We really *do* need experts to help us understand and manage hazards. (go figure!)
I have spent the last 24 hours looking at media reports and social media posts about the Texas Hill County tragedy and being appalled by the level of misinformation I am seeing. I have tried to put together an updated, more reasoned summary I hope you'll read.

I just updated NASA's CO2 dashboard. In April, CO2 reached a new high, averaging 430 ppm over the month.

In fact, every year CO2 reaches a new record high because we are failing to reduce emissions.

These measurements began in 1958, and the line only gets steeper.

This is really bad.

I wrote this NASA page about wildfires and climate change, and I'm so excited it's finally live. It's a tireless effort to get big pages published at NASA - as it should be!

How long will it remain up? Who knows. Check it out while you still can. 🧪 #climatesky

The fact that Deepseek R1 was released three days /before/ Stargate means these guys stood in front of Trump and said they needed half a trillion dollars while they knew R1 was open source and trained for $5M.

Beautiful.

This was a tough week to be working in the federal government (NASA). But in my non-government work, we had an excellent conversation about how fossil fuel money is pumped into our government - mostly to republicans. You can already see the benefits gifted to Big Oil by the new administration.

We have to define what we mean by “AI.” Because the model that advanced our understanding of protein folding and the LLMs that churn out the nonsense slop that fills the internet both get called “AI.” And the latter is co-opting the usefulness of the former to create this exactly perception.
Do you think AI can be boycotted out of existence? What benefits are there to not using it? There are benefits to being thoughtful to how you are using it, yes. But rejecting it is like...I don't know...rejecting a life saving vaccine. Accept it or die a slow death.

I loved learning from NASA scientists while writing this piece. NASA is dialing up its abilities to find big methane plumes, including some very cool test missions over oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. They found “dozens of plumes” which sometimes can be fixed easily.🧪

Nice to see Jessie Diggins having fun and crushing it in Ruka this weekend. In her post-race interview she always finds someone to thank for their contribution and help. This time it was the US team’s wax technicians. Strong, cunning, gracious, humble— she’s an inspiration to me.
