FTR I think today’s Trumpian GOP is the most overly white nationalist version of an American political party since the Dixiecrats, but I don’t think it sprung up fully formed because millions of school children were so furious about the treatment of Romney in 2012 that they became Nazis.

By repatriating the survivors of this attack, Trump is essentially conceding what most observers now believe: this was not a drug smuggling vessel in the first place, and therefor the administration lacks the evidence to charge and try the survivors.

Not defending anything specific, but as a general rule, racists are not racist to white people, but they feel comfortable to say racist things about non-white people in front of white people. Racists assume all white people are racist unless they have a specific reason to believe otherwise.
