"As out of fashion as it is to talk this way, we are all really in this together. Academia and industry do different things most of the time, and we each benefit from that. And that’s why the silence from industry about what’s going on with the NIH et al. is so infuriating."
dereklowe.bsky.social
Biopharma companies and CEOs are keeping their heads down at their own peril. They should speak up about what’s happening to the NIH and other science agencies before it’s too late.

Silence gives consent. And no one should consent to this.

The first HUB annual meeting will be the day before the SFB meeting, April 7-8 2025 in Chicago, IL. The educational and community outreach team is led by myself, @brianaguado.bsky.social and Elizabeth Cosgriff-Hernandez, and we have funds available to support PI-trainee pairs to attend HUB and SFB.

There is something about a haka that is absolutely undeniable. It’s embodied resistance to colonization that is completely alive & a source of strength & determination. It’s a practice that reminds these people of their power. They blocked this bill that would have rolled back indigenous rights.

Arizona, California, Massachusetts, New York, Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming, you no longer need to go through a commercial preparer to do the free e-file: the IRS is pilot testing a direct version in your states

The U.S. Department of the Treasury launched the pilot Direct File website for the Internal Revenue Service!
directfile.irs.gov.
Taxpayers from 12 states can now file federal taxes directly with the IRS for free this season.
No flying cars yet, but Americans are getting better digital .gov services

This allowed her to reduce the size of the data files needed to describe the sequence of amino acids in a protein, which I can imagine was a big deal in the 1960s, when hard drives had MB capacities 💾

This is terrible. To me, this is a signal that the department chair does not care about their colleague. I would also write a great letter but I will also add that the department chair needs to do more to support their colleagues in the letter.

Dear all dept chairs:
Pls give tenure & promotion letter writers more than 2-3wks. This is really important.

Dear all Asst (and Assoc) profs,
Yes, I'm going to agree to write a letter, and yes, I'm going to do a good job. Don't worry.

This is such an important lesson, y'all: peer networks are so often where the most relevant and useful support can happen.

Here’s what I tell my student when they express this anxiety:

Write in community along the way and your community will be there to support you further down the path too.

Share your work with friends. Go to readings and cheer on peers and mentors. Activate yourself as a literary citizen.

Great to know there's no point in writing a good book unless you are already friends with a bunch of already-successful people!
