Downside: There is no plan and no courage. No attempt to sort the tax system. No strategy for the economy, like the one @johnspringford.bsky.social suggests here getting-out-of-the-hole.uk. Even good policies, like mansion tax, simply fiddle for pennies instead of properly reforming property tax.

"Britain has failed to base its economic strategy on what it’s good at - tradeable services, science and tech, universities, niches in advanced manufacturing.
And since Brexit, it has been actively undermining its economic model, which is founded on openness to trade, ideas and people."
New essay out today by me and @acjsissons.bsky.social - ‘Getting Britain out of the hole: a plan for the economy’. You can read the whole thing here getting-out-of-the-hole.uk

Say what you like about a wet weekend but by heck it's an opportunity to get stuff done - it's been solid printing / cutting / folding here, meaning I now have a (very limited) stock of Marginal, my photobook. Better work out how to sell it or there'll be a lot left for next year's #yorkopenstudios

It's the system, stupid - there isn't the capacity to enable the new neighbourhoods we need, but easier to blame the newts and promise to "rip up red tape" (whichever political colour you are, apparently). At last some serious questions from within -

73% of Copenhageners don’t own a car, and the city has made huge strides reclaiming public space for people that had been previously surrendered to cars. Now candidates in the upcoming city election want to prioritize “car storage” again. Not surprisingly, @colville-andersen.com isn’t holding back.

No idea why I bother with design - working with a brief and thinking through rational responses - why don't I simply have a competition for every decision? Bath in the kitchen? Give it your best shot! Bother with a roof or just go for nicer skirtings? C'mon roof-lovers, bid! What *is* this nonsense?

People who want to return Britain to how it was in the 1950s, but also resist any thought of income tax rises, might want to do a bit of cursory research.
