The Kingdom: Offspring (1999)

One full year of doing this, wowee :D

I can say a lot about this comic, but to put it simply: I love that it’s about how much Plastic Man loves his son and was there for him. After years of seeing the opposite, of Plas being a POS, this is nice.
Offspring, embarrassed at a bungled surprise assault, grumbles about how his jokes fell flat, and how he wasn’t being taken seriously. It’s exemplified by the crowd around all looking at him, most asking him to make them laugh while he bounces past a shop selling Flash, Superman, and Green Lantern merchandise in one window, and Plastic Man merchandise in the other. The direction of the panels shows Ernie going from the “traditional” heroes’ side to Plas’, in great visual direction. Ernie, having stayed out late for the stakeout, tries to sneak back into his apartment… only to be caught and trapped by his girlfriend, Mikey. Ernie/Offspring is a new version of the old Plastic Man Jr. from the 60’s comic, and as such he’s back to dating Micheline DeLute III, although here she’s just Mikey. One thing I really appreciate is that Mikey’s drawn with realistic proportions, not as a “typical” superhero babe character. Artist Frank Quitely is great at giving female characters real proportions, but it’s exemplified with Mikey here, especially when you compare her to other heroine and villainess characters in this book, who are shown with more “traditional” forms. Group of villains attempt to steal a flying car to head to Egypt while Offspring’s hero friends gush aboht his dad, saying “I wish MY folks cared that much about ME.” Given that the past few decades have had Plastic Man abandon, insult, and even hit his kid, this right here really makes me smile. He’s a guy who loves his son, always has been. Maybe because I’m going through some things with my own dad at the moment, but I really cherish this comic for those reasons. Ernie and Plas embrace, their hugs wrapping around each other a few times. It’s incredibly heartwarming.

I've done a few connecting covers in my time but this was an odd one. Two variant covers for the same comic that I don't think it was made clear were meant to connect. Still, I'm happy with them individually and like the where they both stand alone and fit together. Happy anniversary #DoctorWho!

Fun fact about this comic: the intent with Gunther, to make him different from the O’Brian version of Plastic Man, was that he actually resembled real plastic, and his powers involved fully fluid shapeshifting, as opposed to the old Plas, who was more of a stretching and flexing hero.

Is there a Tangent Universe omnibus anywhere? It looks like there’s a three-part collection, but it seems really old, given it uses the mid-2000’s DC logo, and online seems really expensive. Is there any modern collection of it?

my current "grab a book to read on the train" re-read is It's Superman by Tom DeHaven and I love this book so much. A retelling of Superman's origin story set in the Great Depression, by the poet laureate of comics-adjacent novels.
