The text reads: Ovarian Form 1st stanza - about ¼ of the poem - tone should gain momentum and be energetic, excited, alive, freeing 2nd stanza - one to two lines (or about an equivalent ratio for longer poems) - tone is a sudden break or shift in direction from the first stanza 3rd stanza - about ½ of the poem - tone should show a descent, getting darker and moodier and heavier as you go, until… 4th stanza - about ¼ of the poem - tone now shifts back towards hope, circles back to beginning themes, and starts its movement back towards that energy from the first stanza Additionally: The last word of each stanza should be the first word of the next, and the last word of the poem should repeat the first word of the poem.

Spark vs. Gasoline we knew the room was on fire but locked the door anyway. you smiled like gasoline. A poem on a background of a purple, grey, and black stripes, the poem reads: it took me so long by Winona Anderson, I was ten, thinking I knew what a crush felt like, there he was— knew we loved the same bands. I knew what a crush led to, even then. But I was so young, I’m not worried yet. What it led to, even then— think of how I’m all wrong. I’m not worried, yet now stung like a lie. I’d think of where I went wrong— was I just broken? It just grew like a lie, so I’d sit and pretend Was I just broken, was there a reason? To sit and pretend, I was like others. Was there a reason? Took me years to see I was like others – My ace family.

I cannot overstate the importance of reading books, particularly novels by respected authors, for critical thinking skills and reading comprehension. If the big gun novelists don't interest you, start small and work your way up. Or read whatever interests you. Just read. Or listen. It's all books.

It's finally that time of year again for my favorite volunteer opportunity - Model UN! Especially in today's climate, there's nothing more important than giving youth the space and the tools to disagree respectfully and work together across their differences for the greater good.
