Factoid: While the 127 was launched before the R5, the latter was being readied for production though there’s no doubt the Polo & Fiesta were influenced by it & the R5.
Another thing in no doubt was the car’s considerable success (Europe’s best selling car from 1973-78 being a good example)…

The flagship Polo carried the Ranger name, and claimed to be 'extraordinarily well-equipped', featuring extra driving lights and roof bars (the latter oddly missing from the main picture). The Polo Ranger had a 1272cc 55bhp engine and fuel-saving 4+E gearbox.

Although superminis had moved on a lot during the '80s, VW still claimed the Polo was a game-changer and the benchmark for rivals to beat. Saloon and 'coupé' bodystyles were also available, but the estate-like hatchback was the staple seller, attracting a loyal repeat clientele.

Scanning the cars for sale websites during the week and came across this gem. A #Polo GL from 1999, with a 1.6-litre, 75bhp engine (not very friendly for VED vs performance/costs, sadly), but a sunroof, a later #VW radio unit, and only 16,000 miles. £6000. Lovely. www.carandclassic.com/l/C1970972
