I'd largely agree with this assessment, though I'd give some larger play to the 14th Amendment, which really is a remarkable achievement, and got us closer to those ideals. Though we didn't really start ACTING on it until Second Reconstruction.

I do think its interesting you come close to then stating my point, only in the negative. The Declaration is aspirational. Of course we fail it! And that's good! We can never truly achieve it, because we keep expanding the ideal.

The reason I'm so hard on liberals is because if you do theorize poorly you'll do politics poorly, and their weird fantasies of "maybe cops will arrest ICE agents" or "maybe this award for a trump ally is actually an anti-trump move" is the kind of stuff that gets people killed
