Been watching the Hobbit movies a lot lately. Untranslated Orc speech is always subtitled "native language" and stands out because every other language is either named (e.g. Khuzdul) or subtitled as "foreign language".

TIL Princess Bride is a Christmas movie. The book is wrapped in Santa wrapping paper, and there's a odd paper Santa on the wall at the start. RIP Rob Reiner.

How the United States achieved its de facto nuclear test ban—and how to preserve it
Citizen activism and legislative pressures helped stop US nuclear weapon testing. They will be needed again to protect the moratorium against Trump's call for renewed testing.

The idea that sexual abuse is part of “private” life instead of a public crisis has done incalculable damage. Anti-rape activists have to fight to even make it possible to expose sexual abuse as a wrongdoing in public without being silenced and undermined. That fight is far from won

Why won't anyone do a story on any of us getting railroaded?

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.
