Progressive, pro-democracy nerd. We can't control everything in this world. What we can control is what we focus on. As we confront a difficult reality, let's all stay present in our own lives and with our loved ones.

I canceled my online subscription to the LAT when Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked an editorial endorsing Kamala Harris. Also canceled NYT and WaPo and subscribed to The Guardian, which has surprisingly good coverage of the U.S. and California.

Interesting idea. A entire news market will get a public editor.

Indianapolis will be the first local media market to get its own Public Editor, who will monitor all the newsrooms in town. tinyurl.com/2s44zxe8
Poynter launches public editor project to serve news audiences in Indianapolis - Poynter
Partner newsrooms will publish the editor’s independent analysis of local news coverage across the market.

I suspect that the print circulation number is easier to come by, probably because they have to actually print and deliver that many newspapers. It gives some insight into the online numbers, which I think is the point.

It’s tricky though due to declining print circulation overall.

Hi Phillips, I wonder if you feel like sharing your research notes organizing system on Substack for the curious. It’s always interesting how people go about organizing their research and thoughts.

I spent my afternoon making & passing out Yes on 50 flyers in front of Walmart & other stores in English & Spanish, and you can do it, too.

If you wanna save democracy, you'd better put your all into it!
I know that's high pressure, but this is high stakes!

The Spanish flyer is in the next post.

She was young and was victimized by Clinton, Republicans, and the press. Everyone deserves a second chance, and she has especially earned hers.

The rain has soaked through everything. Your socks just sprouted a mushroom. You haven't smelled decent BBQ since your last night in Texas, before mustering. Suddenly, a metallic creak echoes through the fog. They were coming again. The naked cyclists. "Just four weeks a year," you mutter.

I caught Covid in spring 2022. I suffered badly for about 8 hours, and then the fever broke, which I attribute to the vaccinations. It was still a gradual and slow recovery, but manageable. I shudder to think about what would have happened if I hadn’t been vaccinated.

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

A reminder that the Vice President of the United States is basically property of Peter Thiel.
“He believes the Armageddon will be ushered in by an antichrist-type figure who cultivates a fear of existential threats such as climate change, Al and nuclear war to amass inordinate power.”
He believes the Armageddon will be ushered in by an antichrist-type figure who cultivates a fear of existential threats such as climate change, Al and nuclear war to amass inordinate power. The idea is this figure will convince people to do everything they can to avoid something like a third world war, including accepting a one-world order charged with protecting everyone from the apocalypse that implements a complete restriction of
technological progress. In his mind, this is already happening. Thiel said trat international financial bodies, which make it more difficult for people to shelter their wealth in tax havens, are one sign the antichrist may be amassing power and hastening Armageddon, saying: "It's become quite difficult to hide one's money."
11 It's because the antichrist talks about
Armageddon nonstop. We're all scared to death that we're sleepwalking into Armageddon. And then because we know world war three will be an unjust war, that pushes us. We're going hard towards peace at any price.
What I worry about in that sort of situation is you don't think too hard about the details of the peace and it becomes much more likely that you get an unjust peace. This is, by the way, the slogan of the antichrist: 1 Thessalonians 5:3. It's peace and safety, sort of the unjust peace.

DHS said earlier she was arrested for assault for throwing objects at agents.

ps. If you're worried about how small farmers going bankrupt... most small farmers are millionaires with a 6-figure income. From a day job off the farm. Small farms don't have enough acreage to lose real $$.

It's the bigger farms that will suffer the most. That's why they're hollerin for bailouts.

Farm bankruptcies are back in the news, so it's time to pull this chart out again.

Hey look they kept rising during Trump's first term. Then they went way down under Biden.

Now they're up again? So weird. Thanks Farm Bureau for the graphic
Screenshot from Farm Bureau article on farm bankruptcies. It shows farm bankruptcies climbing steadily 2014-2020, falling by half in 2021, & continuing to fall through 2023.

A billion dollars is the socio-political equivalent of a loose nuke, and we should work as ruthlessly and diligently to prevent the acquisition of the former as we do the latter.

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”
