Take Dani’s word for it: I deliver careful, nuanced editing of smut for any and all species (even humans). I also edit non-smut fiction.

I do free sample edits, and I have openings for fall and winter. Check out czedits.com or direct message me here.
This level of nuance is why I’m proud to have you as my editor. You’re going to have fun with the cephalopod smut

And I'm halfway through Blasted Research by Coffee Quills. I love post-apocalyptic fiction, and I love it even more when it’s queer. Asexual enby rep, polyamorous rep, and an undercurrent of government lies 👀

I'm also nearly done with Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell. The protagonists are absolutely adorable! I'll probably finish today. It’s a solid exploration of the arranged marriage trope, and a good use of the miscommunication trope (which I usually dislike).

I've made decent progress on 3 books on my February #queerscifi TBR. I'm a third into The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers. It’s great to be back in the world of the Wayfarers series. I’m loving this instalment so far, and expecting to love it even more as the story progresses!

Action beats are another tool at your disposal, especially associated with the “new speaker, new line” convention. The action the speaker performs right before or after the dialogue, on the same line, is an implied indicator.

Context can provide the same information. If there are only two speakers present, using a new line for each person can reduce the need for dialogue tags to a minimum.

Of course, repeating the invisible “say” too many times can also draw attention to it. “Ask” can be a similarly neutral choice for questions. But not every line of dialogue needs a dialogue tag.

#writingtips
Repetition is usually frowned upon. But the verb “say” has become invisible to readers, so using it often in dialogue tags isn’t a problem. In fact, fancy verbs can have the opposite effect: they draw attention to themselves instead of disappearing to let the dialogue shine.

Help a trans author pay rent!
I was counting on my Kickstarter money to help pay my rent this month, but it’s delayed. And that means I’m behind on rent.

I hate asking for help (I’d much rather be the one doing the help), but I’m stuck in this position again.

Many thanks in advance to any helpers.

In the #WritingCommunity, diversity is our strength. Uplift queer and trans authors, writers of color, disabled storytellers and neurodivergent voices. Publishing still favors the same few; let's disrupt that and share stories that mirror the richness of our world.

Now moving on to my February queer scifi TBR.
Currently reading:
- The Galaxy, and the Ground Within, by Becky Chambers
- Winter's Orbit, by Everina Maxwell

Loving both of them so far!

To completely end my January reading wrap up, the eighth book I finished was The Lonely Skier, by Hammond Innes.

Post-WWII intrigue with an interesting premise. A
screenplay writer is sent under false pretences to spy
on the guests of a ski resort.
